Name a technology you'd like to see in the near future

I would love to have a car that could drive itself. No more issues with traffic jams, just sit back and watch a movie.

Or better yet how about teleportation, instead of a hour and a half commute to the office, just step in a teleportation chamber and get to work in .087 seconds.

Automated transport (autonomous cars) is coming and it's going to reshape the entire way we think of cars, and for the better. It will be one of the 21st century's better boons and I'm not kidding in the least.

Other than that I want a reverse microwave, something that sucks the energy out of food to super cool it. I have a lot of things I want frozen quickly.

I agree, I'm just not sure it will happen in the 21st century. People are so resistant to the idea that I'm not sure it is politically possible.

I think it's fair to assume that if driving were automated, then there would be no more motorcycles?

No thanks.

It's rare i tell anybody about it and they can even wrap their heads around it, they just come up with silly answers like "But I enjoy driving". In any case it will expand quickly after it's implemented properly in one test area and its awesomeness becomes undeniable. Google has already been driving a car on public roads by itself (though a driver attentively paying attention). This could begin with upgrades to cars and only works in the carpool lane for example, then people will get on board when they are exposed to it.

See, like I said.

It will begin on highways, which would benefit most from it and also be easiest to automate (no traffic lights or pedestrians).

A means of powering autos and heating houses that doesn't require the use of fossil fuels.
It's long past time to tell the OPEC nations to get fucked.

I want something that should be pretty easy to do. I want a tablet that I can use to surf the web until I find something I want to watch, then 'fling' it to my TV where it would instantly appear and then use the tablet to control its playback.

I completely agree, and I've been saying that this is how it has to start as well. One lane. Then as that gets full, two lanes. In a number of years there will only be one lane that non-automated cars can drive on.

The problem I’ve been thinking about is not the issue of technology, it is the political and psychological issues.

Politically it is going to be difficult because it will cause very large and powerful companies to lose some of their wealth and power, and they are going to respond with an all out attack on our psych. Every time there is any minor accident they are going to have it all over the news telling us about how unsafe these cars are (and they will buy the news stations if needed to do it.) We are already at a point where facts don’t matter when it comes to news, you can say anything as long as you claim that you are entertainment.
People naturally fear not having control, and that is going to play heavily in the fight to get automated cars on the roads.

iPad 2 + AppleTV 2 + AirPlay is pretty much there.

Have you tried taking the bus or a taxi?

Ya, no service, bla bla...

Teleportation device and auto-haircutter. Just sit down and lasers cut your hair to however you like it. That way I wouldn't need to burn about two hours a week shaving my head. Yes, I'm going bald.
