forgive my culinary ignorance, but isn't sushi by definition RAW fish?
Thats like saying "i wont eat a hamburger with a burger on it"
I'm a southern white boy, so I know zero about Japanese culture, but I think sushi involves rice rolls of any kind and sashimi is a type of sushi with raw seafood in it.
from what my Japanese teacher told me way back when (language), rice is the more...important ingredient in sushi.
She was somewhat coo-koo though, so who knows?
sushi doesn't mean raw fish dammit.
sushi: rice mixed with shit. thats right, i said shit. it can be raw fish, cooked food, veggy only, etc. the main part is that it is rice + other thing. it generally conforms to certain types of sushi:
nigiri: ball of rice under cut of fish or other sea creature and sometimes cooked food
maki: rice rolled into a log with nori and other goodness
hand rolled: same as maki sushi except, as the name implies, rolled by hand instead of a mat
there is also block formed sushi, scattered sushi, and other types...
sashimi: slimly cut fish fillets
