It boggles my mind to think that people even consider the Call of Duty games as serious contenders. Even CoD1 was pretty bad when compared to UT99, Quake, Tribes, and the greats. Even Battlefield 1942 and 2 were better by miles.

Fun, simplicity and playability with a good multiplayer crowd and options?

Left4Dead, Left4Dead 2 even more so.

You can compare Battlefield and CoD, but not UT, Tribes, or Quake. They are two very different kinds of FPS games. I have played them ALL, and I am eagerly anticipating Black Ops. I enjoy MW2 more than any of those other games.

Yeah, I love UT2004 (favorite multiplayer game) but I didn't mention it in this thread because the OP didn't mention a single arena FPS.

I'm guessing you didn't play COD1 + Expansion. One of the best singleplayer fps experiences ever. You're comparing multiplay to singleplay. COD1 was more about singleplayer than multi.

The original CoD is still my favorite MP shooter. I never played United Offensive though, I own it, just never got around to installing it for some reason. CoD2 was pretty good, I didn't like it as much as the first but I moved to it anyways because of the improved graphics and larger player base. My biggest issue with CoD2 was the disappearing xhair when moving, also hated the addition of the trench gun. I didn't like the grenade indicator at first either, but it actually grew on me because of the excessive nade spam CoD is infamous for. Oh yeah, and no more health kits...

The only MP shooters I've had close to as much fun with since CoD are TF2 and Uncharted 2. If Uncharted 2 had LAN support I think it'd be a competitive league game like Halo and Modern Warfare, it's ridiculous fun and would rival any PC game if it had KBM support. TF2 I put a lot of hours into, but haven't touched it in a really long time. It's a little too casual to play seriously. I never feel any sense of accomplishment when my team wins a round in TF2, it's just something different to mess around with once in a while.

I've played Quake 3 and 4, UT2K3 UT2K4 UT3, Battlefield 2, CS 1.6 and CSS, Painkiller, all the Halos, Modern Warfare, and Combat Arms, but I couldn't get into any of em as much as CoD. Combat Arms deserves a little credit for being free, I'd actually rather play that than Modern Warfare, so it's worth a try. I think the MP portion of FEAR actually went free to play a long time ago, too. That was kind of fun for a while, but I gave it up pretty quick, sliding melee attacks were an instant kill and abusable around corners or in hallways.

I didn't play CoD so it wouldn't be fair to give my opinion but the game I played back in the day and the game that got me hooked into PC gaming was UT99 - Coret Facility was the first map I played on i think and it was CTF style. From there I started playing Day of Defeat 2.0 beta until DOD Source came out and ruined it. And now I play UT3 DM and TDM which is very fun.

Soldier of Fortune 2

seconded - best MP ever. CoD series is pretty close to this.

people like the BF series and I can't for the life of me figure out why. Other than the shitty hit boxes/weapon accuracy, playing on a huge map as infantry sucks ass. Now I know, you'll say "get a vehicle", but when people TK you over a vehicle or ignore your requests for a ride 99% of the time?

Best multiplayer FPS? Hands down - Tribes2 (with Bad Company 2 coming in as a close second)
Best multiplayer MMOFPS? Hands down - Planetside
[end of line]

I'm showing my age here, but I used to love Star Trek Voyager:Elite Force. Of course its not the best game ever, but the sci-fi nerd in me loves the setting, and it was one of the few good Trek games.

The original Call of Duty was awesome, I certainly agree with that, I loved it. But there's so many better FPS games that than it's not even funny.

Elite Force was, more or less, a total conversion. I personally never got into it.

The Tribes games were awesome, but ancient now. Same with most of the games being mentioned (Quake, CS, ect).

COD1 was one of the best SP experiences I've ever had in a FPS.

Unless you guys personally love one, or all, of the older games like Counterstrike.. I'd stick to something newer that's still respectable like TF2 and L4D2. I'm not a fan of games like BC2.

TF2 was best when it was initially released though, that is true. I like the purity it had. Still a good game though, just slightly ruined.
