I've been playing CoD since it was released. I've tried the old MoH series and Battlefield set as well. I've got an old friend (who loves to play CoD) coming over and want to try something new that (perhaps) rival CoD in shoot-and-be-shot fun. The game is simple, graphics are great (for it's time) ... it's simply a fun, playable game worth far more than the original retail purchase price.

So what, in your humble opinion rival CoD for fun, simplicity and playability in a LAN/on-line environment?

... and why?

Thanks ...

Counter-Strike 1.6
Quake Live
UT2004

Bad Company 2 is the closest recent game in quality to those listed, though it still comes nowhere close. I don't understand the lack of quality FPS titles over the past ~6 years. What exactly have developers been doing?

UT99 and Quake Live probably fit the bill.

Team Fortress 2 is pretty good. I'm just not a huge fan of class systems though. Bad Company 2 is the only exception for me.

Why does everyone hate on Bad Company 2? It's pretty good. It seems like everybody resists new shooters in favor of their old ones, because it's the "cool" thing to do.

I thoroughly enjoyed the original CoD and the second CoD as well (and thoroughly despise the Modern Warefare's of CoD). MoH was the first to have the WWII theme with 'that' type of gamplay, but it didn't feel right and didn't have classic maps such as Brecourt, Carentan, and Bocage. With all that said, the very first FPS to hook me in to FPS, and even PC gaming, was UT 99. UT99 will be the king of FPS for me, followed very closely by TF2.

RTCW then original COD for the game play. Both amazing and different from each other. Both older games that live in what I would call the golden age of FPS. Today fps games suck (in general -stalker is wonderful)

edit: tf2 is also a really good fps.

BF2 or TF2 although BF2 would be better for a squad of buddies on a big server. Reality Project for BF2 is real team focused assuming you have 5 friends to play with it could be real good.

BF1942 + Star Wars: Galactic Conquest mod.

Of course this is like the ultimate MP experience vs. the ultimate SP experience.

CounterStrike hands down. I can pick it up again today and there will be tons of competitive people and its still fun as hell.

Serious Sam

This game is actually a LOT of fun, especially if you don't take it seriously.

SoF2 was super during it's time. Still lots of servers going. Read any review, this game was a beast. It has everything most games still don't do: Throwing knives, leaning, gore(nobody has it like this game), random map generator(anybody?), etc. Definitely worth checking out if you don't mind somewhat dated graphics.

It's amusing that nobody other than the OP has listed a CoD game as their #1 choice.

UT99. The mutators mean a customized game can be setup in a few seconds without additional downloads. Bot AI that plays well also helps when the maps are too large for the # of available players.

TF2 pre Scout Update... the game was at its most balanced state, and then things (including the great art style) went to hell...
