"Michelle Laws, an official in the local NAACP and an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University, said the classes create educational systems "based on superiority."

How ignant can you get

NAACP is stupid. You should not hurt smart people by catering to less-smart people's insecurities. This is rediculous.

Differentiation sounds exceedingly complicated.

Starting in about 5th grade I never saw the "regular" students again except for gym/shop class etc. The GT /Honors/Advanced placement track provided what was essentially two educational systems and provided me with an excellent education IMHO.

Anyone else get the idea that black leaders have done more harm than good for minorities since the death of MLK?

Parent Ava Nackman added fuel to the fire of those who view differentiation as the "dumbing down" of the curriculum.
She said her sixth-grader, whom she described as gifted, was assigned a collage as a class project in her differentiated math class.
"My child is in sixth grade, not second," Nackman said, her voice rising. "I can't help but consider this assignment an insult to my child's intelligence."

Same thing happend in my country.... we had an elitist system, where you would go to a seperate 7-12 school depending on your grades in a national exam at the end of 6th grade.... so the best students were pushed to do their best.... but they broke it all up recently.... so the smarter kids do not get pushed (academically) anymore... and as a result the average score at the end of 12th has dropped....

Yep. The NAACP has completely forgotten his "I have a dream" speech where MLK said he wanted a day when were not judged on the color of our skin but by the content of our character. The NAACP has completely reversed that and now want entitlements based on the color of their skin and not the content of their character.

To hold the smart ones back to spare the poor stupid kids feelings. It's always fun to have in class academic competitions like spelling bees between smart kids and stupid kids and have them sit down after the first round and then sit in total humiliation at seeing their mental superiors spank them....but I guess this is what the NAACP wants rather than a class that can focus strictly on the intellectually challenged kids needs.

God, I'm so glad my kid want be going to a public school system

The NAACP's version of fair:

Rather than allow the NFL to refuse drafting a legless man, they insist all the other players have their legs cut off.

Typical far leftist BS.

NAACP is pretty stupid how it wants to promote underperforming minorities at the expense of smart students...if they're underperforming for a reason (eg lazyness, no common sense, ignorance), let them be and stop holding back the people who want to do well.

Before you know it, spelling bees will consist of spelling words, but you aren't told if you are right. In the end, everyone is declared a winner. Then everyone celebrates and participates in a circlejerk.

Kumbaya !

LOL, that episode of the Simpsons come to mind in which Bart is in the special class. They are playing the chair takeaway game with 8 kids and like 15 chairs so everyone wins

MLK and Frederick Douglass would be rolling over in their graves

The system is pretty stupid and seems awfully subjective, however I don't see anything about racism, discrimination, minorities, or any similar buzzwords anywhere in that article.

You may be right, but you are reading a lot more words than are in that article.

Oh good lord, not again.

I taught in a class (fifth grade) where everyone was grouped together. The particular lesson I taught one day was about water pollution.

1/4 of the class didn't know what pollution was in general
1/2 the class knew what it was, but didn't understand the causes/effects
1/4 of the class knew as much about the subject as me.

Do you have ANY idea how difficult it is to teach like that?

Furthermore, the class was split into 4 reading groups based on ability. That means that you are essentially teaching four seperate classes. Each reading lesson took me on average 1 hour to complete each day for each group.......and the reading groups (technically called literature circles) were only an hour per day!

Why doesn't he just say that minorities aren't smart enough to be in AP classes? Cause that's basically what his message is...

Ahhhh...the classic episode where Homer goes to work for the mad genius Hank Scorpio. One of my favorite.

Face it, the Public school system is NO MORE than a baby sittin service with LOTS AND LOTS of resources.

hey, i'm not complaining. it's great, it's all free. and if i want my child to excel, than my wife and i spend the time with them that they get the extra edge they need to excel.

Another reason why socialism sucks. Just imagine a health care system like our public schools or local DMV. Every time something is socialized, it is made to cater to the lowest and least worthy.
