That's why selective schools are a good thing :)

One up for entrance exams, even though you do sometimes end up having some stupid kids slipping through the net.

This is one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Why hold back more talented students? I attended public school, and took all the top classes. Its a fact that there will be students that just don't care about school. Mixing these students with students who are there to learn take away a lot from their education. These more advanced classes help these students out by preparing them for future studies (college for example).

I belong to one of these "minority" groups (hispanic), and I don't see these advanced classes as being unfair. I'm not saying minorities are less capable of doing well in more advanced classes, but I am saying that there are students (of all races) that just don't care about getting an education. Just because some students underacheive, doesn't mean that we should hold back other students.

This I gotta read. :p

You know, I'm black, and I was in ALL advanced classes in school. See what happens when you apply yourself? Saying that classes divided on academic performance are unfair to minorities is asinine to the extreme.

HOWEVER...

All I got out of that article with regards to the NAACraP was that it happened to be one of their spokespersons supporting the undifferentiated classes. I don't see where it says they're unfair to minorities, even if that was the gist of her statement. Maybe I missed it, but I don't see this stuff.

But... I really, really hope that isn't the underlying drive for the NAACP person's statements... Don't they realize stuff like this sets equal rights back 20 years? It's stupid.

WTF does any of this have to do with minorities? Neither of the 2 articles you mentioned said ANYTHING about it being geared towards giving minorities an advantage. I guess you just assumed it because you saw the letters NAACP?

What this is, is just old dumb people trying to look out for younger versions of themselves.

It's nice to see a good post taken off topic by a few arrogant people with stories about how they're sooooo smart

Typical far leftist BS.

What? No legs? Is that a new league or something? Will ESPN 2 carry it?

Where in that article does anyone from the NAACP make any statement that even remotely resembles that thread title?

I don't see a problem with having different class as long as the break up is fluid. It should not be some test taken in fourth grade that decides if you get on the college track or the Mc. job track.

I was about to apologize for neffing with my story above, but then I realized that my story has a little bit of bearing on the issue. This type of schooling could work for some classes, but not for all. My math teacher allowed us to work at our own pace, but I think her method was flawed if there were people in the class that cannot learn on their own. I wouldn't want to have all my classes like this.

I just don't see how it's unfair to minorities. I'm white. My family was/is disfunctional and poor throughout my K-12 years. My parents divorced when I was young, so I grew up w/ a single, working parent. Aren't these the call signs of a minority with an unfair advantage? I don't get how people still use race as a crutch.

Hard work and dedication means nothing to these fvcktards. They want a free ride...an easy way. Screw the smart kids. We need to make EVERYONE feel like they are smart. The NCAA keeps the unfortunate, gullable people on their knees, proclaiming that whitey is keeping them down. It's time to move beyond the 1800's.

Still looking for where it mentions minorities having anything to do with this story...

Guess you are a product of the public school system then. It's not there in black and white but pretty close.

teachers who are actually proficient and qualified in differentiation won't be settling for the paltry wages of public schools. So now you've got overwhelmed teachers segregating IQ's in a class, trying to remember which table gets the crayons and which table gets the calculators.

that's just stupid.

I came to USA when I was 14, learned english in 4 months and went to regular classes, after one year I enrolled in 5 AP classes. I passed all the tests with 4 and 5's and these were the hard AP's, not envirommental science or that easy stuff. I am a minoritie btw, I am spanish. RIght now I working towards my CS degree. Advances classes, in my opinion, are more than fair to minorities; especially the ones who come from another country looking for better opportunities.

just my 2 cents.

No, it's not in there, period. You proved yourself wrong with your post that I quoted.

"The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of all persons" NOT ALL MINORITIES.

"Intelligence, she said, includes more than just academic aptitude" Duh? This has nothing to do with race either. She's talking about how people can be smart in other ways other than school work.

They were talking to a professor who happened to be in the NAACP. You saw the letters NAACP and assumed it was racial. If anything is a product of poor schooling, it's your reading comprehension.

Since when has the NAACP been seeking equality, not since MLK got shot. They are seeking favoritism and entitlement

I don't disagree with your assessment of the NAACP nor this program, but I stand my claim that you are reading more into it than what is there.

Then what was their intent?

I think her affiliations to a college and the NAACP are simply mentioned to show that she is, at least in some small way, qualified to make an analysis of the program. Had the author left out the NAACP part, you would have never even made the assumption.

It is quite possible that she really does mean that it's unfair to minorities, but from the articles alone, it is a stretch to assume that.

I often feel that the NAACP and "civil rights leaders" are too quick to assume that there is racism going on, and it's only fair to call it when the opposite occurs.

Maybe white people are sick of the NAACP trying to give another race a hand out and advantage due to the transgression of their forefathers

And maybe blacks are tired of the NAACP insisting they are dumber and mentally inferior to the white man and need a handicap

Knowing what we both know about the current NAACP and her being a spokesman without there being an official comment from another NAACP member one can only put the two together.

wow amazing.

So they would rather have everyone on on class and split them up there (are they going to have more then one teacher in the class?) then have them in separate classes.

I was in one of these type of classes in about the 6th grade. We had everyone in one big classroom (was neat we had cots for naps, bean bags sit in and read, books all over if we wanted to read A TV if we didn't want to participate in class). The class had a wide spectrum of students. some that could read and some that couldn't. same thing with math.

We had like 6 teachers that would teach the groups. homework was optional. they would preach grades were NOT important. But learning how to talk and treat each other was.

I have a feeling more and more places are going to be heading toward that. Reducing the classes for the few kids that are smart (actually i don't think they are smart. just go to there full potential) is going to backfire in 5-10 years. not just for the kids themselves but for the Country.

I'm already paranoid by the kids I encounter the few times I go to a fast food place and encounter a non-Mexican working there. I used to work there and no one even the mentally retarded custodian were as stupid as some of these kids....and just think when we are old and gray they will be running our country.
