N.Y. Close to Approving Cell Phone Ban

<<The New York Senate approved a measure that would make the state the first in the nation to ban drivers from using hand-held cell phones.>>

Good, I don't know how many times I've had to avoid an accident by some IDIOT cranking across 2-3 lanes of traffic because thay don't want to miss their exit.

<< What else would you expect from one of the most liberal states in the country. >>

I consider myself conservative, and think the ban is a good idea. Who the hell would support the use of cells while driving? Hell while we're at it lets let people drive drunk, eh?

I don't need someone telling me whether I can or cannot use my cell phone in my car just as I don't need someone telling me to wear my seat belt or to not eat while driving.

What needs to be answered is:

1. Will this law ban the presence of cell phones in cars?
2. Will this law be enforced by police?
3. Is this an acceptable level of revoking our freedoms to protect citizens of the state?

Sure, you can pass laws day in and day out to make the country a safer place. But there is a line which we have drawn as a society which is where the acceptable level of risk is.. And this might be too far.

yeah
but my daily driver is an auto so it isn't much of a problem.

And I'm responsible. But I'm not driving right now for other reasons.

Suffolk County (NY) already has such a law. If the State Law follows the County's, then:

1) No.
2) Yes - only if erratic driving is involved.
3) Yes - but there are already laws against driving while distracted.

if there are already laws in your state about driving while distracted what is the purpose of this bill?

If someone is driving erratically be it on or off a phone they would be pulled over ...

this bill sounds to be just a slap in the face to cell phone owners.

gt the thing is here in New York the bill is only affected in some places, now it will be state wide.

Do people have a problem with NY?

Ah, are you one of those people that think banning people from driving while intoxicated is a bad idea? In case you've been too busy to notice, there are hundreds of millions of other people on the road, and *maybe* if you lose your concentration for 2 seconds it's ok because the other drivers have thier concentration and can save their ass from you by swerving out of the way, but if every single f-ing moron in the world gets a cell phone and everyone's distracted, everyone's just f-cked. Besides, why should the responsible drivers have to avoid these idiots at all, if they can't drive intelligently and talk, it IS a safety risk, and it SHOULD be outlawed. What's your problem with this?

It's called prevention. By your theory, we should let all people drive drunk, and only arrest those who happen to drive erratically. Obviously police can't tail every single person to see how they drive, so instead we come up with laws that make it crystal clear to the common moron that certain things make driving hazardous.

No.

Driving while intoxicated and using a cell phone are two entirely different situations. DUI related accidents is one of the leading cause of accidents on the road, and driving while intoxicated IS ILLEGAL.

What they should REALLY ban is people surfing and posting while driving--like I am right now.

j/k 😉

You are insane to assume such a thing. In 2000 DUI related incidents made up 1/3rd of traffic related fatalities.

Comparing drinking and driving to cell phone usage is an insult to those who have lost friends or family members to drunk drivers.

I think this great! The people that drive while yapping into a cellphone are the biggest safety problem on the road next to DUI.

It's already illegal in Toronto. Anything that might distract you from driving (cell phones, drinking coffee, eating) will get you a $300 fine. Anyway, just FYI.

That's merely because cell phones haven't completely gained popularity yet. Give it a few years.

where's your conservative reasoning when you need it.

There are more cell phones than televisions in this country.

alright, find me one legitimate statistic showing that, and I'll begin to consider your point.

Here in Brazil, driving while talking on a cell phone gets you a hefty ticket. The solution is to use headsets or those speaker+mic devices.
