Ok, been trying out my new 6800 GT, which easily hits Ultra speeds. Well, here's whats been going on.

Halo, runs great at whatever speeds and settings.

Doom 3 runs great. Ran it on Ultra speeds (400/1100) at 1600x1200 with 16xAA and High. When playing it runs no problem, maybe some slight slowdown when your screen jerks from being hit. The timedemo runs and gets about 10FPS though, even though when actually playing it runs much smoother.

Now Far Cry. I had some issues and then remembered the 1.1 patch. This seemed to fix the issues (yellow texturing, stalling). Well, I was playing at Ultra speeds at 1280x1024 with all the details cranked up and AA on high. It ran smooth until a few minutes of playing. Then it started stalling (freezes for a few seconds, then goes to smooth for about a second, then freezes for a few seconds...). I thought, ok, I have the settings too high, so I turned them all to low. Restarted FC and it continued to do this. Well I thought maybe it is the OC. So I turn it back to stock GT speeds and go back in, turn things to high and restart. It runs smoothly no problems or anything. I thought maybe its a heat issue (even though there wasn't artifacting or anything).

So I decide to check the temps after several different things (3DMark, FC, D3) in Coolbits. After Far Cry @ Ultra speeds it would be about 65, while Doom 3 would be about 68, yet the Far Cry problems persist. I don't know whats going on.

Here's my system:
A64 3000 @ stock
Asus K8N-E Deluxe
1GB HyperX @ DDR400
Audigy 2 ZS
Gainward 6800GT 61.77 drivers

In a nutshell, here's the problems:

Playing Far Cry @ Ultra speeds at 1280x1024 with settings on high and high AA it stalls, but when playing Doom 3 @ Ultra speeds at 1600x1200 on high with 16x AA it runs smoothly. It also runs hotter in Doom 3 than in Far Cry.

Anyone have ideas of what could be causing this?

different games, different gpu utilization. the tolerance for heat/overclocking will be different for each game.

Turn off Fast writes in the BIOS should fix you all up and you should be able to OC highier.

Alright, I'll do that.

Of course, my previous problem appears to be fixed now. I updated the BIOS for the card, and now it looks as though I can run Far Cry on Very High at 1600x1200 at Ultra speeds.

Off of Gainward's site.

I have the "Golden Sample" version, and my card is warranted for Ultra speeds, so it having any problems at those would be a problem that needs to be resolved.

Yep, I'm all happy now.

I was going to leave my card at stock GT speeds, since everything was running fine and I was having that problem with Far Cry, but I was looking in the manual and saw that Gainward warrants the card for the Enhanced mode that their software (and perhaps this BIOS update) sets, which was 400/1100.

So I got an Ultra for $420 + shipping (which was about $15 for overnight).

Your not along in Farcry troubles.. My god, Facry is the buggiest pile of crap i've ever seen..

6800 + DX9.0c + 61.77 drivers = Farcry problem..

I've got both a 6800 and 6800GT sitting on my desk deciding which to return to the store, and both, regardless of which machines, exhibit wierd farcry troubles, mostly artifacting and freezing..

I'm writting it off as a buggy game, and going to uninstall it and sell it on Ebay. Ironically, Doom-3 at max and every other game I have run flawlessly.

And Doom 3 is suppose to stress it more and be more finicky with overclocked gear! Go figure :)
