Nürburgring race track WTF

Was just watching the SciFi channel and they were talking about the Nürburgring race track in Germany. It's the worlds most popular race track (apparently), also one of the most dangerous. After all the races are over for the day, the track is opened to the Public...paying per lap, no speed limit. Seems pretty cool of them to open a race track every day...

But, then they mentioned something very quickly (as if they didn't want you to catch it)...someone DIES there EVERY WEEK. Maybe not a good idea to open it to the public? I mean, they probably open the track to people when it's getting dark out, and it's one of the most difficult tracks out there...AND there's no speed limit.

I guess that's how they do things in Germany though 😛 - How long would it take that operation to get shutdown in the states?

Still kinda hard to believe someone dies there every week (or every other week, would still be amazing). Gotta trust the SciFi channel though, right? 😛

In an attempt to obtain accurate figures, I visited Adenau police station in September 2002 to ask, and they reported Nordschleife 10 fatalities between January and September that year. A check with Nurburgring GmbH for the same period in 2005 provided a figure of two. That suggests somewhere in the three to twelve range in a full year.

Uh, that's kinda the point of a race track... 😛

In the US of A they will probably have run offs, aslwell as signs on what type of turn and how many feet till the turn and suggested speed, as well as a waiver

Yeah about 50 people die a year their on average from what I have read.

I went with 2 mates in 2006 over new years eve and there was oNLY one other car there! BUT it rained, hailed and there was nice on the northern section of the track.

But yes it is insane that the government doesn't shut it down due to the fatalities but it's a lot of fun and I hope to go again this year 😀

I couldn't imagine racing on that track. I wonder how long they study/train before hand? I've seen some videos of the public races and it's absolutely insane... You've got guys on motorcycles trying to get around Porsches at like 120... I cringe just from watching.

The thing that gets me is that it seems to usually be packed during the nice days. If I'm racing on a track I haven't practiced on I want to take it slow and focus... it seems like it would be so distracting having some of the semi-pro guys flying by you constantly.

Edit: And even if it is "only" 50 people per year - shit man, thats one a week.

Ps. It is a toll road -

The Nordschleife has remained a one-way, public toll-road for nearly 80 years except when it is closed off for testing purposes, training lessons or racing events.

hell yeah

PS what's all the chalk on the track of Nürburgring (or NURBURGER as I call it)? Saw all the chalk when I played it in GT4 also. Very fun track to play...in a video game 😛

I've wondered the same.

It's a 'toll road' and not a 'race track' so it's fine to smash it around as fast as you want 😛

The first lap was slow as the weather was completely insane. My 2nd lap was faster but not all that.

You just push as hard and as fast as you have talent or how big your balls are 😛. I was well within my limits so I was fine. A bit of fish tailing on the first lap that sh!t scared my mates but I was in control.

I'm not sure how it would be on a normal day but on new years eve we only saw one other guy so it was fine. I have done track days and you ust move over a bit and let faster people pass, no big issue.

Yes thats one a week but 1-4 people could be in one car. You know the risks and take your chances. The problem is that people drive too far for their skill and that coupled with the barriers being close and not like a lot of tracks where you have a lot of run off area.
