MySpace.com Subject of Sex Assault Probe

MySpace.com Subject of Sex Assault Probe

HARTFORD, Conn. - Police are investigating whether as many as seven teenage girls have been sexually assaulted by men they met through the popular Web site MySpace.com.

The girls, ages 12 to 16, are from Middletown and say they were fondled or had consensual sex with men who turned out to be older than they claimed. None of the incidents appeared to be violent, said Middletown Police Sgt. Bill McKenna.

He said it was difficult to determine the exact number of victims because some girls have been reluctant to disclose that they met their assailants online.

The social networking Web site allows users to create profiles that can include photos, personal information and even cell phone numbers.

In a statement Thursday, MySpace.com said it was committed to providing a safe environment for its users. The site, which includes safety tips, also prohibits use by anyone younger than 14, though a disclaimer says the people who run the site can't always tell if users are lying about their ages.

Duhh Ya think?

Horny teen girls who wanted to get with someone a little older. It happens all the time. My guess is that one of the girl's parents found out, told other parents, and that is how it got out. The girls probably wanted to keep it going.

I agree, its important for parents to be more involved then previously thought with online activity and to let their kids know if something happens they have the option of reporting things to cybertipline.com to stop it from happening to them or someone else.

my daughter is almost 13, and i know what she is doing all the time. i couldnt image letting a girl my daughters age go off someplace or chat with strangers on the internet.

Sooo, not suprising.

The girls are claiming it was concentual, and didn't do jack to try and stop it. They were out there looking for it to happen, parents got wind and raised hell. Don't blame them, but that's the case.

What do you have them do if they come across something by accident or a friend? I sometimes feel that kids may be embarrassed aboutt hsi stuff, thats why I think a resource like cybertipline is important because they can do it on their own.

i was actually contacted sometime ago by a young girl claming to be older. i was suspciious from the get go and eventually put 2 and 2 together. I called her parents and told them what she was doing they were very greatful.

If they men were under 25 I fail to see what is the big deal. The only iffy one is the 12 year old.

I take it you're still a teenager?

I am 22.

Again I am talking about if the men are in their low 20s.

I agree a 40 year old man and a 16 year old girl is wrong. The man needs to go to jail for that.

But a 24 year old and a 16 year old, what the big deal.

They're 16; that's the big deal. They're still extremely immature -- some physicall, almost all mentally. There's only one reason why someone older would want someone that young.

Exactly. These girls are likely only "victims" of "sex assaults" in the eyes of the law.

I agree, these girls are not real victims.

Seriously...

It's sad that so many of these crimes happen! Why the hell are men such perverts? Is it that hard to get a girl thats over 18 that you gotta prey on high school freshman?

I'm not attracted to girls under 18. I just don't see the big deal with a 20 year old and a 14 year old.

Think about it like this. Many of people have fathers who are around 7 years older than our mother.

So when the man was 20 his wife would have been 13. See what is the big deal.
