Example - ancient people ate willow bark for headaches. They had no scientific evidence that it helped. Thousands of years later, asprin is derived form willow bark, and is taken for headaches.

Full of sh1t?

They did have scientific evidence. They found a direct cause and effect relationship. They ate the bark and their headaches went away.

I am not sure about my house or home but I would remove the tree if it was blocking the front of my business. Bad Feng Shui according to my Taiwanese born wife...

The tree is about 20 feet tall, 5 yrs old. It's about 20 feet in front of my front door. She's been reading some article about Feng Shui and doing this will bring more 'light and energy' into the house.

My issue is that this is taking away the 'life' of this beautiful tree.

Any Feng Shui expert here who can shed some light on this issue?

Thanks.
Andrew

So you want to give up an energy saving source of shade and a wind break because some ancient Chinese text says that cutting down the tree will bring more "light and energy" into the house?
If she wants more light tell her to open the damned curtains.

Also tell her to try the OTHER advice in the damned book BEFORE hacking up property value enhancing items like a tree.

I assume she has rearranged the furniture, painted etc etc BEFORE deciding to chop up a big tree right? I mean, cutting down a tree isnt exactly where I would start.....

agreed. If your house is south-facing, cutting down such a tree would the most idiotic thing you can do for your property. Feng shui is just as legitimate as psychics are. It depends on perspective of course, so if you're inclined to trust your horoscope, then the Fend shui approach might be your's or her thing.

I don't think trees and paint mix. Something about the chemicals in the paint maybe, not sure.

you must not have read the thread where the chinese government spent $60k to paint a barren mountian green because of feng shui.

Some paint wont hurt. Its used to keep snails off of fruit trees.

Sound like a very quick growing tree that is 20' at 5 year old.

The tree could be take down if it is bushy that block your view of water/mountain/meadow view. Don't take the tree down if it gives you privacy from the neighbors & block road noise.

Personally I wouldn't take the tree down even if it is blocking my view unless it is an unsightly tree or is damaging my driveway/foundation/perimeter drain/roof.

There isn't a need to argue with the woman because their scorn isn't worth it. Try reasoning with them and use environmental/arborist logic to persuade her to see it your way.

good luck!

We had a good President's Day weekend. I buttered her up all weekend by washing her car and some house work. By late Monday night, I explained to her using the environmental/energy saving perspective. She says the tree can stay.

Thank you all for your feedback. I'll update you if she changes her mind. Crossing my fingers.

Watch the Penn & Teller Bullsh1t episode on Feng Shui and make sure our wife sees it. Please don't destroy a tree over bullsh!t voodoo science.

i cant believe people think this fung shui crap is viable information...it is no different than any other superstition such as breaking class or a cat walking in front of you...if you believe this kind of crap you have serious mental issues....if you pay for some 'expert' to come in and move your furniture around then you should promptly remove yourself from the gene pool

also: tree huggers...trees dont have feelings...nor do they feel pain...stop being a hippies and let him cut down the damn tree if he wants...

i think the only decent posts in here were about cutting the tree down for foundation issues or that it is not growing properly...or is just a crappy tree...

Fortunately the term "Feng-Shui" has never been uttered in my presence by my wife.

haha, my sister commented on some room layout that I had setup and said that it was 'bad feng-shui' to have a desk face away from a door... personally, I disagree especially if the door has a lock.

20' in 5 years is typical for crap trees like Silver maples and Bradford pears. In 10 years, the next big wind or ice storm drops part of the tree in a random direction. Cut it down.

On the other hand, I'd argue that it is bad "feng shui" to have your computer desk facing away from your door - if you're a teenager and your desk is on your room. The bad feng shui comes, of course, from your parents' ability to sneak up on you at "inconvenient" times. 😉
