Get it! I would recommend not getting a 42" plasma due to the jacked up resolution. I highly recommend at least a 50" though. ;)

I haven't paid much attention to plasma lately. How is the lifespan on them? I sure don't want to spend a few grand on a TV that fades out in a few years!

Thanks!

That's for sure. She likes sports, sci-fi, and big screen TV's, and he's the one complaining about how much it will cost? :Q

Your wife wants and HDTV. Use this opportunity and get one! She wants a large screen! Take advantage now before she changes her mind!

I'm sort of in the same predicament. Our big screen tv just broke and while I have the green light from the wife to get HDTV, I figure it's gonna take quite a chunk of change to get there. It's not just getting the tv itself but don't you have to upgrade your Directv dish and pay additional monthly cost to get HD? Also we have the standard DTivo, that would also require upgrading to a HD-DVR to get HD source (life's too short to waste on live OTA commercials). When you have kids, there are other priorities over what we consider personal luxury entertainment...you know, other stuffs like food and diapers. This isn't the old days when you can just go out and snag a $600 tv and be done with. Btw, my platinum man-card membership already automatically got reduced to the bronze level when I said "I do" and kept getting reduced further as I add more kids. It's probably at bare-dirt level now so may as well shred it since the only thing keeping it alive is that I pop a beer and watch football on weekends.

My wife told me the other day she wants a HDTV so she can watch...BSG! She's a sports buff, but she doesn't care about HD for anything but BSG.

I told her that SciFi isn't in HD just to avoid the entire matter. Was I wrong for this or should I indulge her anyway and hook up my Samsung upconverting DVD player so she can watch her BSG DVD's?

what kinda geek would turn down a woman TELLING him to buy a new gadget...
WTF is wrong with you turn in your ATOT and man cards asap..

Sweet, Vonage!

If you have a bright environment, that rules out plasma due to screen reflections (you could curtain the windows maybe). DLP is also questionable in a bright environment, though there have been some improvements in the tech. In a bright environment, people prefer generally LCDs. For sports you want something with a good response time (I know Toshiba buyers complain about that). A Scepter is not bad either as a cheaper LCD. I did find a deal on a Viewsonic 37"

I hear negative things about Viewsonic but I used to have a 19" of there's I was very happy with. For reviews, I would look here:

For deals, there are a few sites I'm not sure I can link here but I'll try (please forgive me if this is incorrect:

http://www.fatwallet.com/c/18/
Also the deal site on A-Tech has some options as well.

I have laughed pretty good at some of your responses. I now know that I have a problem - I'm unhappy and that's why I'm not too keen on buying a new TV. Just last week my wife told me to build myself a new Core 2 Duo system so her sister can inherit my current system...and I haven't done that yet either. I guess I'm just not in the money spending mood lately. Throw in all of the darn choices with HDTV and I'd rather just sit here and post on ATOT.
