My wife wants an HDTV

My wife told me the other day she wants a HDTV so she can watch...BSG! She's a sports buff, but she doesn't care about HD for anything but BSG.

I told her that SciFi isn't in HD just to avoid the entire matter. Was I wrong for this or should I indulge her anyway and hook up my Samsung upconverting DVD player so she can watch her BSG DVD's?

Yes, because I really don't like how expensive the TV's are for how much TV we watch. She is a Patriots/Celtics/Red Sox fan too, so perhaps it would pay for itself eventually - or she would get ticked off and throw something at it!

I know what you mean. My TV was ruined when I moved recently, and buying a new one hurt. On the other hand, if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy. 😛

You (correct answer): "YES"

😛

LOL! Too bad (for our bank account) that when we last looked at them she said that anything smaller than 40" is "too small".

Most wives are against big expensive TVs. You have a wife that wants one and you say no!?!??!?

Dude....whats wrong with you? I'll take her.

She wants a big TV, likes sports (and BSG!), and makes more money than me...you can't have her!

But yet you are complaining about said big tv.

Yes, yes I am. I used to spend money without thinking, but I've changed a lot over the last several years with regards to money and I'm having trouble justifying the TV.

So...what's a good flat LCD to get? I don't want a lamp that needs to be replaced.

you can get a nice LCD projection HD for around $1500. I've seen 24 and even 36 month no interest financing at circuit city and best buy. watching sports in HD really makes for a better experience.

what kinda geek would turn down a woman TELLING him to buy a new gadget...
WTF is wrong with you turn in your ATOT and man cards asap..

There are some factors to consider. How bright is your viewing environment? What types of inputs do you need (you mention an upconverting player, is it component out?) I'd agree with a previous poster, if you want big and cheap a DLP would be in order. The best time (for the next 6 mo.) tp find a deal will be the day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday).

Sorry, the ATOT rules require me to say this, I have no choice in the matter. Is it possible your wife is compensating for something? Again, I'm sorry but rules are rules and I don't want them taking my man card.

During the day, the viewing environment is pretty bright - the living room is at the front of our townhouse and the windows face WNW so the sun is at its worst during the morning hours. The DVD player has HDMI and component. We have an Infocus X1 projector in the basement so I'm already familiar with DLP - we've had the X1 for over 2 years now and it still has the original lamp, but I'm sure the TV would be used more and I'm leary about shelling out an extra $300-$500 every 12-18 months for a lamp.

If the wife is compensating for anything, it's the fact that she's an absolute work-a-holic (12-16 hour days lately) and she wants an escape from the hell of being a government IT contractor.

I dont know what BSG is but I do know sports look great in HD. I also am not sure how the tv will pay for itself if you like sports, but hey, justify it anyway you want. Get it if you can.

Get a 42" HD plasma and be done with it. That also gives you the option of mounting it on the wall if you want.

Get it! I would recommend not getting a 42" plasma due to the jacked up resolution. I highly recommend at least a 50" though. 😉

I haven't paid much attention to plasma lately. How is the lifespan on them? I sure don't want to spend a few grand on a TV that fades out in a few years!

Lifespan on plasmas are not a concern. By the time you need to replace it, you would have already gone through a few bulbs in a DLP/LCD projection set. As for the 1024x768 rectangular pixel resolution on a 42" plasma, it looks excellent in HD. All the info you could want on that topic can be found over at avsforum.
