Wow, I don't see why you have any problems. Try walking down Main Street America drinking beer and see if the cops don't give you a hefty fine. Try peeing in public in any town in America and see if you don't get fined. Be happy all you had to do was pay the cops and go on your way instead of making a court appearance, or at the very least waiting in line at the clerks office to pay your fine, like you most likely would be doing in the States. IMO, giving the cops a few dollars is much better than having it on public record and possibly hassling with court or having to go to the clerks office and wait in line.

Why do people think they are exempt from typical laws just because they are in Mexico?

i was in ensenada once and witnessed a drunk mexican peeing into his hand on the sidewalk. In the US, normally everyone is subject to the laws. In Mexico, there are different rules for locals and tourists.

I agree with this post... The only place in the U.S. I would consider walking down the street with open intoxicants would be Vegas, because it's legal there. I've heard the stories of corrupt police forces in Mexico but think that it'd be pretty easy to minimize your chances of becoming a target. Common sense and planning ahead would go a long way.

So, because some vender put it in plastic cups for you, that makes it legal eh? Riiiight...

The guy who wrote this was smart:

^Went to TJ for my first time this last June.

^we had a good time, drank a good amount of beer, had some great food, sat in a strip club for 30-minutes, got propositioned a few times, checked out the red-light district...... whoa! and then walked back across the border.

^Seeing the police there with automatic weapons makes you understand your no longer in America.

^We made a day out of it and left promptly before darkness came!

For decades, college kids from SD have walked into TJ and gotten ripped off that night. The police scams have lessened somewhat, but the muggers are still there in force. To get to the red light district at the foot of the main street (Constitution) you walk across the TJ river on a footbridge about 500 feet long. When you come back drunk with or without your drunken friends, in the dark middle of the bridge where there's few lights, they mug you and your friends and then run. Sometimes there are the armed cops in guard towers at each end of the bridge, but they won't be there when you are. Better to take a taxi for about $4 and they'll drop you off close to where you entered Mexico, an easy walk to U.S. Customs. Better not to get drunk in downtown TJ, just have a few, take a cab back to the border, sit at the beer stands there for a while and then cross back to the U.S. BTW, the U.S. authorities regularly bust juveniles for being drunk.

You've obviously never been to New Orleans. 😛

I've been to both several times, and love both places, as well as many other American cities. What I just don't understand is why people think they are getting a raw deal when they break laws in Mexico that are common even in their own states, and then blame the Mexicans. I could understand if they were pissed if it was a shakedown, but it's not. They broke the law and at least they can go on their merry way with a payoff to the cop and no hassle or public record like they'd get back home.

As for two separate rules for locals and tourists, so what? You're still getting a deal for being stupid and breaking the law. The locals just know how to deal with the cops better, and the cops know what they can get out of tourists and what they can get out of locals. And ignorance of the law is no excuse. It doesn't work in the States and it doesn't work in Mexico either.

I live in Mexico and I know how it works down here. And I see too many stupid, spoiled American tourists thinking they can do whatever they want just because they think Mexico is some ignorant, backwards country and they don't have to give a sh!t about the laws down here.

You mean mexico is not ignorant, backwards?

hhmm..

My brother was in the Navy and I went to see him in SD and we went over to TJ, Luckly for me I was warned of the cops there and was told to take only my ID 100bux and my ATM card, put 80 and the ATM card in your shoe and 20 in your pocket. He had things like this happen to him and everytime the Policia took the cash he had on hand thinking he had no way to get anymore and left it at that.

I will tell you this had I known there was a law that stated you cannot drink a beer in the market place where it is sold everywhere I would not have done that. The vendor sold it to me and asked if I wanted it in a to go cup. With that said the police are crooks and one reason people are bailing out of Mexico and into the US is because that country has very little of anything except corruption.

I had a friend that went to Tiajuana.

He was stupid and was in a club with some friends at night. Got a phone call so went outside to take it. Started walking while he was talking and got a block away from the club (note that it is about 1:00am  ).

Two cops jumped out and demanded his phone. He said no and started walking away. They jumped him and wrestled him to the ground (to get his phone and wallet probably). In classic style, he punched one of the cops right in the face. This pissed them off and they beat the sh!t out of him, knocking him out.

He awoke while being thrown in a cell with about 30 other Mexicans. They decided they didn't want an American in the same cell as them. Luckily for him there was a sympathetic Mexican who helped fight them off. Somebody had a knife though and stabbed the Mexican that was helping him. At this point some of my friends friends found him and got him out of jail. He got lucky.

WTF? Why did you think it was ok to walk down the street drinking a beer? The cops love stupid Americans.

I got pulled over in TJ once with a carload of friends. It was like 3am and we were heading home. Cop started telling me about the fine. 😉 What was great was when I said I was broke, it was the end of the night and we were heading home, all 4 of us pulled out our wallets and like synchronized swimmers opened them all to show they were empty. Not even planned. 😀

Cops walked off and discussed what to do. Came back and said "Drive safely" and sent us on our way.

See, none of us are stupid enough to keep our $$ in our wallets when in TJ.

You and your boss were on the right track with the $50, but you then let them make you take the $$ out of the ATM. Should have kept entering the wrong PIN or something and say that you had no $$ in the bank, or the card wouldn't scan, or something. They would have bitched for a while but let you go.
