My Trip to Tijuana

So I was in San Diego last week for a conference, I saw the trolleys and decided to take a ride to Tijuana.

Once in I found the whole street scene a little amusing store fronts everywhere, and if you go remember initial price means nothing. I saw a hat I wanted I asked how much? Oh for you I give you good deal is what I was told. $38.00 I laughed! Long story short, they were down to $10.00 before I could get out of there.

Stopped and ate what was said to be chicken tacos on the street and had an ice cold Corona to wash it down, we were sitting at a nice little table right next to the street, so this was pretty neat. (Funny thing I did not see any pigeons anywhere aroound, sure hope this is chicken)

So we leave and while passing a few more street vendors, were asked if we wanted an Ice Cold Corona, we feeling parched agreed another Corona would be good for the walk, the vendor poured or Corona's into plastic cups and sent us on our way. (My Boss was with me)

We went about 10 steps from the vendor when a Tijuana Police Car pulled up and 2 officers jumped out! They asked what we were drinking in the plastic cups and we told them why it is Corona! About that time the lead officer started shaking his head... He asked us to come over to the car and get our ID's out, I am thinking man this is not going well.

After he explained to us that you cannot drink a beer while walking down the street we apologized and thought this would be the end of it. Oh was I wrong.

He said he would have to take us to jail because a "Fine" would have to be paid. We told him we only had $50.00 between us, and he stated the fine would be much more then $50.00. Needless to say it was a very uneasy feeling. Well these nice police officers decided to help us out. They put us in the back of the police car, now imagine this the back seat was 100% molded plastic and when my boss sat down they handed him the door panel that would not stay on the door. They then drove us to the ATM and actually waited on us to withdraw the additional $200.00 needed to pay the fine while they were holding our ID. Once we "dropped" the money their car window they drove away and we headed back for the good old USofA.

Just a word of advice to anyone actually wanting to visit Mexico. Stay Away from the border towns, nothing good will come from a visit there.

This is a true story.

Duh. OWNED

It happens all the time. Just consider yourself lucky that it turned out ok and you only lost $250.

Same thing happened to me in Cancun, except I was peeing in some trees off the main strip instead of drinking, and I got out of it for $40.

they hustled you out of your money damn quickley, u should told them to take u to the USA embassy

I would have paid the money as well.

If $200 is worth sitting in a cell for the day, I would say take me to the embassy.

:sigh; never carry your cards in your wallet down there. just say you have $50, thats its, and you dont own credit or atm cards. in fact, dont even carry a lot of money down there. tuck a lot of that stuff in your sock or something.

yea, corruption is rampant in these small towns. on the converse side thousands of americans drive into Tijuana, park wherever they want, get parking tickets and then split without ever paying. but you're a victim and its too bad that that incident ruined your experience. sorry man.

Also, never drive into Mexico if you like your car.

I will NEVER go to Mexico again. Ever!! I didn't have something like this happen to me, but I know it happens all the time (happened to a couple of friends once who were camping on the beach).

Scary scary scary!!

I got the crabs there once just from going into the bars.

I'm surprised they didn't bust me for "smuggling" the little bastards out of the country.

Sucks what happened to you too BTW!

I haven't been to TJ in probably 10 years. There really isn't any good reason to go there quite frankly. It's a dump of a town.

I was down in Mexicali last week for business though (we have a manufacturing plant there) but all my time was spent driving to the plant or in the plant. We ate lunch in and then drove back in the early afternoon. Talk about a dump of a town though. Graffiti everywhere. Think of the worst area in your town for graffiti and multiply it times 1000.

Only the main roads are paved, all the side streets are clay/mud and full of ruts. If you drive down one of those roads I've been told that you will never be seen again. I believe it.

Most of the town looks like it is about 100 years old and ready to fall down. There are some areas that seem to be expanding and some new homes are going in but I can't imagine what the quality of construction is like-probably not good.

Oh, there are no crossing gates at the railroad crossings-no lights, no bells...nothing! Make damned sure you look before crossing one!
