I got my W-2 today. Now what...?!!

Well if you are single, don't own a home, have no children, and make any kind of a decent living bend over and grab your ankles.

Bending over waiting for Uncle Sam to ram me hard. Fvck, I have to come up with some way to fudge a few numbers to get a refund somehow.

I am in that position 😀
Ahem... 🙂
Note to self....tax season is upon us....invest heavily in Vaseline stock.

What pisses me off is that parents get tax deduction for kids, even though kids use taxes for education, etc.
I think parents should pay more taxes.
Yeah...there's a solution. Take even more money out of the hands of hard working people just trying to get by.

Huh? Their kids are being educated at taxpayer's expense, they should pay for it, not get deduction?

Maybe because taxpayers are paying for it. If you are a homeowner, you are paying for it.

You're missing the most obvious solution: tax the kids! 😕

I'm sure your position would flip 180 degrees when you have kids...

Financial institutions are the slowest in getting their forms to you. Grr.... :|

edit: for clarity's sake

The deduction isn't for education expenses....it's for the expense of feeding, clothing, insuring the health of the child, etc.... Taxing people and taking more and more of their $ is not going to solve education or any other problem. The way to solve those issues is through fiscal responsibility, which is something most if not all governments have none of. It has been proven time and again that you cannot tax a country into prosperity. Government officials need to learn to spend wisely and remember that the money they are spending belongs to THE PEOPLE and there is not an endless supply of it.

How much do you think I will get back? Approximately 12k+ income and I paid $1100 in federal taxes. I am single and live at home with my parents going to school full time.

All I am saying is that if you benefit from taxes more, you should pay more instead of less. It's just not fair to tax someone who doesn't benefit from these taxes more than those who do.

Using that logic the people on Welfare would pay the highest taxes.

Also, there should be a cost of living deduction for those of us living in the bay area for example.
Like if making 70K in Silicon Valley is equivalent to making 45K in Austin, so I think I should be taxed at the rate that someone making 45K in Austin would be, because that's my purchasing power.
Also, how much does H&R block cost?

Never used H&R Block but I think their fees are based on your income. Not sure though...

As for the cost of living deduction.

The most fair tax system would be a flat tax. It's for that very reason that we will never see one.

It pissed me off big time.

Hmmm... you guys do realize that paying more is a good thing right?

Getting refund=paid too much during the year=gave uncle Sam interest free loan for a year.

Yes, I do realize that. But you don't notice paying a little too much in taxes, but do notice the large refund check. On the other hand you don't notice paying less taxes, but do notice having to send a nice fat check to uncle Sam and uncle Gray.

Supertool, what about parent who do not send their kids to public schools? What do you do for that group of parents.

Fine, but they get a deduction too, so they at least get some money back. But someone with no kids at all doesn't.

Flat tax is the way to go.
Poor people should have an interest in controlling government spending and reducing taxes too. No representation without taxation!

I have to agree. We take more and more off the tax roles. And those that are not taxed can keep voting themselves benefits.

If you don't like it, Move to Russia
It's ironic that we spent 45 years defending the Europeans from the Russian commies, and now the Europeans are bigger commies than the Russians.
And BTW, the tax rate is 13%. It's good not to have superpower aspirations anymore.

Looks like we they learned well from us.....Now if we can just remember what we taught them😉

You have to remember that people without children don't normally incur the same kinds of expenses that people with children do. The deduction for people with children is not for education expenses, it is for various expenses such as health care, food, clothing, day care, etc, etc, etc.... If you don't have children you aren't having to pay out that extra expense and therefore don't qualify for the same deductions. Do you think the government should give out deductions to every taxpayer for their day to day living expenses? I don't, that's nearly the same thing as Welfare. I don't however have a problem doing it for people with children because unless they are very wealthy they need the break. I don't have kids myself, at least that I know of, but have several friends who do and even though they make what most would consider a good living they still struggle to pay all their expenses now that they have children. Giving them a tax break is the right thing to do.

IMO, if you're doing it right, you should either be getting a small refund or have to make a small payment. If it's more then a few hundred either way, you need to adjust your deductions. But of course, life happens. It can be pretty hard to judge from one year to the next with constant change (jobs, families, lifestyles, tax laws, etc.)

I have my W-2's, but we are waiting for the wife's to come. Thankfully we bought a house this year, so that should ease the pain.

I used to get great refunds until I got married. Then it all changed. Damned government. 😀

Wow....just got my confirmation email for my Federal return being accepted by the IRS.....according to the email my refund should be in my savings account within 48-72 hours. That's damn fast......I'm impressed. No, I didn't do one of that rip off refund anticipation loans....this will be my actual refund. Woo hoo!!
