My suitemate just gave a homeless guy a free meal.

Nice of him, but I learned a long time ago to ignore homeless people/shaddy people who call out to me.

I'm the same way. The way I figure it, there's plenty of shelters and kitchens to go to. There's also enough low level jobs and government cheese out there to where a person doesn't have to go homeless and hungry.

Most homeless are mentally handicapped, whether by downs syndrome, schizophrenia, or less common ailments. Most people could & would cope with it by getting a job and thus no longer being homeless.

Wouldn't their handicap entitle them to even more freebies from .gov? Serious question.

Most of them have so many problems that they cannot be treated without huge amounts of money. The government has for the past 20 years or so, cut back on mental health care which gives these people fewer and fewer places to go. Many of them have too many problems to hold down a job and, when they do get help, they often go on their medication for a while and when it starts to work (ie they feel more sane) they stop, thinking they dont need it. The entire thing is a vicious cycle.

It's a common misperception that most homeless guys are just lazy... most are too sick to do any better in life and, sadly, there isn't enough help out there for all of them.

Learn something new everyday, thank you for educating me.

Being a Christian should have nothing to do with it.

If you are good and generous only because your religion tells you to be, it is nothing more than a guise, IMO.

It would have been nice of him to buy him some food instead of some rancid crap that will have him bleeding from the anus approximately 15 minutes after consumption.

i think being a christian for his friend probably had a lot to do with it. while the act is the same for either he or a non-Christian, i would hold that the motivations behind the same act are different.

Good for your suitemate. I think that some of the people who bash Christians are mainly bashing the hypocrisy of the "Christians" who give the religion a bad name. I'm not really a religious person, but that's sort of how i see it. Of course, there will be both good and bad to every religion, sect, group, etc.

Your story kind of reminds me of this one time...when I saw this one homeless dude at an intersection holding up a sign...I tend to not give homeless people money but I had a box of Girl Scout Peanut Butter patties on me..so i gave it to him. He immediately put his sign down and just walked away from traffic...holding onto the box of cookies. It really made my day to make his day.

cheers,
KiM

Yep. The hypocrits and zealots are our targets.

It does feel good to help people, and you rack up Karma points!

Look at this guy, he's got so much Karma now... 😉

Ah the need to be motivated into helping another person by promises of a life in eternal paradise.

when i was living in poughkeepsie, ny there was this guy that used to walk all over the whole city ever day and collect peoples cans.....when he came to our house i always kept a cold 40 that i'd give to him along with our cans....it gets hot walking around in the summer i'm sure he appreciated it.

It's unfortunate that these days it's sometimes hard to tell who is actually homeless, and who is just putting on an act to prey off generous people.

Right, I served food for the homeless people before. And during that time, I've worked non-christians doing the samething.

Good that he bought him a meal, now the homeless person can use his other fundage for drugs/alcohol later. BTW, I hope that isn't true, just being a pessimist.

I was once at Pollo Tropical with a friend of mine and a homeless man walked up to him and asked him for some change. He offered him all of the change that was in his pocket, which wasn't much, and he declined. I don't get that, money is money...especially when you're homeless.

theres always a homeless guy standing at the exit of the drive thru at mcdonalds.. so i bought him a $1.00 6-piece mcnugget last tuesday.. he was pretty happy
