My State just passed a law against driving with a Cell phone

Here in New York they Just passed a law that says you cannot use a cellphone in your car unless you have a headset on for it or it has a speaker phone feature, otherwise you have to pull over to use it. Does anyone in New york have any opinions about this? I think it's a good law, but I think it's a real inconvienience... do any other states have this law? or are we the only ones so far?
 
im in NY, and I hate it... chances are i will probably still use it while i am driving...

anyone know what kind of fines are going to be given?
 
The law will only come in effect December 1st. Until then, cops will just give you a warning. And even after the law is in effect, you can get out of paying fine if you show them proof of purchasing a head set.
 
good, its about time. hope other/all states get this.

hope you get the chair too if you cause an accident while on the cell.

some peeps cant drive, let alone w/a phone.

I think it's a good thing. I recently saw a news clip on distractions while driving on Dateline and 7/10 drivers failed the test. (The highest score out of all 10 drivers was a 84 I believe) Cell phones are a distraction to people who can't walk and chew gum at the same time. I occasionally talk on my cell while driving but try to avoid it because of the inherit dangers.

I used to live in NY, but I left for a number of reasons...inefficient laws like this being one of them. 🙂 I wonder if the next step is to outlaw 'drive-thru' burger joints, women's cosmetic products, and children under the age of 5--all of which can be equally distracting to drivers as cell phone usage...I think the number of drivers eating whoppers with one hand, driving with the other, or the number of women applying a fresh coat of paint in the rear-view mirror (while eating a whopper with the other) outweigh the number of drivers who have to glance down for 5 seconds to dial a number...
 
Good. People who drive and talk on the phone at the same time usually are driving like sh!t. It's one of the most frustrating things on the road today.
 
Not always. The rare times I do talk on the phone while driving I use a speakerphone and my attention is 100x more on driving than without it.
 
i live in Houston and every day on the way home from work every other person is on their damn phone... 1/2 these jackasses can't drive straight with full concentration and it pisses me off that they're willing to endanger my life so they can have some meaningless convo about what tonight's dinner will be...

if it's that important pull over or at least wait till a light... fines are useless... license suspension would be much better...
 
NY is the first state to do it, an they're gonna lead the way for others. I like it. Even though I do use my cell phone on certain occasions while driving, I think it's a good law.

Then I watched different Congressional hearings on the issue...the distracting from taking your eyes of the road was the biggest gripe. If, however, that it is the case, I say no talking while driving whatsoever...no kids in the back seat asking, &quot;Are we there yet?&quot; ...no wives asking us how are day was...just sit there, eyes straight ahead, one hand at nine o'clock and the other at three, sitting in an upright position with the radio off, with seatbelt fastened, right leg extended with a slight bend in the knee, left thumb resting firmly on the horn, glancing at the mirrors--first the rear-view, then the side mirror--at 3 second intervals, etc, etc...why stop there: Why not legislate more laws that govern every move we make? Fact is, if you cause an accident and are responsible, you are punished...these laws are nothing more than a haphazard, ex-ante attempt to control yet another facet of our lives.

i live in houston too and i can assure you he is right.
 
Oh, and no more 'coolio' rap playing at full volume with one hand hanging out the window and the other over the passenger's seat, while you sit slouched down so far that you can barely see over the dashboard.

I started to agree with you, but then it slowly went away. This is geared for the safety of other, not yourself. They don't want people using their phones and getting into accidents and killing people. Look what happened to Nikki Taylor. She's been in the hospital for 2 months now because some guy decided he had to pick up his phone. It's sort of like the drunk driving laws.
 
I don't know about truckers and rednecks, but State Troopers are better drivers than most. They are trained to be. Seems to me that someone is very bitter about this law. Must have a lot of people to call.
 
Yea, people who oppose laws do so only for their own self-interests. You figured me out, sir. I wear my seatbelt, yet I oppose the law...so much for your theory holding water.
 
You could always tint your windows really dark. That would atleast eliminate being seen from the back and sides. 😉
