I recently installed windows 7 on an old computer I have running a A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo. On the Asus site, there is no support for windows 7, for the BIOS updates or chipset. Luckily I was able to find the audio drivers for the on board AC'97 Realtek for windows 7 separately.

After I installed them, I can see the audio bar moving up and down in the Volume Control when I play something with sound, but I cannot actually hear it.

Yes, it is set to play the on board sound in BIOS.

If no one can see any easy solution, I may just install windows XP.

Do I need the chipset drivers? If so I cant run W7 then.

Thanks in advance

You will need the chipset drivers. Its looking like the audion drivers you installed are not the right ones.

Strange. My Asus-based system (P5) has great on-board sound with Win 7 and Vista. I didn't download any new drivers - they are the same ones that were in Vista, and W7 just accepts them. Have you checked the audio settings in the notification area to make sure the speakers are not muted?

Device Manager shows that the drivers are part of Windows 7 - "High Definition Audio Device." By Microsoft, dated 7/13/09, number 6.1.7600.16385. They consist of the following elements found in /system32?:

drmk.sys; hdaudio.sys; portcls.sys; sysfxui.dll; wmalfxgfxdsp.dll

Right click on the speaker icon in the notification are and you can check all these things. Check with headphones, and then make sure your speakers are connected and powered.

Good advice. I might also recommend running dxdiag just in case there's a problem with sysfxui.dll or wmalfxgfxdsp.dll

Ok, well, I installed windows XP, got all the chipsets and drivers to install, my computer does in fact detect when I plug in headphones into the onboard sound (RealTek sound manager pops up) and even still I do not have any sound...

I searched my computer for these files

drmk.sys; hdaudio.sys; portcls.sys; sysfxui.dll; wmalfxgfxdsp.dll

and it could only find drmk.sys and portcls.sys

Do the other 3 come with the windows updates and service packs?

PS- yes, ive also checked the bios

I believe they come with the basic Windows 7 installation. Drmk.sys was recently updated. It is part of the DRM copy protection monitoring in Win 7. Portcls.sys is an old driver introduced by XP. It has had a few updates since then.

Since you casn hear on headphones, the problem could be with your speaker system and/or its connection. Do you have another amplified speaker you can connect to the same port?
