My solution to the drug problem

Instead of the governement trying to keep drugs off the streets, what would happen if the government gave out all the drugs anyone could want for free?

1. There would be no reason to steal/rob for money to buy drugs.
2. There would be no drug dealers.
3. Drug trafficing would go away.
4. The number of people in prisons would drop off a lot.

The problems with this idea are...
1. It will cost money. (I'm not sure about this because money will be saved on law enforcement and prisons)
2. People that might not do drugs if they are illegal might start doing them if they are free.

Hardcore drugs destroy lives. That's why they're illegal. Don't go off on alcohol and smoking on me, either. I'm not justifying them and two wrongs don't make a right.

Hardcore drugs can destroy lives. Used in moderation they are fine.

I know drugs like meth and crack destroy the users life. I think giving this drugs away for free would prevent the drug users from commiting crimes to pay for their drugs.

Provide the drugs that have a permanent effect on the user.

If they want to destroy their life, help them along.

That's the problem, though. If the government starts giving them out for free, it'll just be another trick to score. Then they'll need more and more, eventually *not* using in moderation. It's extremely rare to find a crack or meth user who only uses once a month or once a quarter or something. Those drugs aren't the kind that you can just "quit" whenever you want. Your body won't let you quit.

Do you have any idea what kind of financial burden you'd be laying on the federal government, raising taxes A LOT?

Indeed, but if you think everyone who takes x or snorts blow occasionally is going to be addicted to them you are seriously mistaken.

I find that hard to believe by just a statement on a BBS. Credible non-bias link to back it up?

No, he's not. Those drugs build physical and mental addictions VERY quickly, eventually requiring more and more just to keep from feeling horrible.

Yes, it's my understanding that after a several days of repeated heavy use one starts to feel the need for more of the drug, but that is not occasional use. I know lots of people who snort blow and take x every month or every couple months and have not sold their stuff to buy more of the drug.

I also know people who have done them a few times and decided it was not for them and had no problem quitting.

I'm not saying coke and x are safe, but it's certainly not like one line or one pill and one is hooked for life.

Drugs are pretty cheap right now even while they are illegal. Imagine how cheap they would be if it was legal for a large company to produce. A lot of money would be saved since we wouldn't need to spend 2 billion on the DEA, and local law enforcement could be cut too.

I'm not really serious about this idea, but it's interesting to think about it.

Decriminalize drugs:
  1. prices drop
  2. government stops supporting terrorism
  3. the war on drugs stops costing me money

Legalize drugs:
  1. government can regulate them through the fda
  2. can be taxed like cigarettes and alcohol
  3. the war on drugs stops costing me money
  4. government stops supporting terrorism

Right, crack, meth and heroin are very different from coke and x. That's the problem with hard drugs, even though they are in the same designation there is certainly a continuum of danger.

It certainly has the potential to yes, but that is not a universal constant.

90% of the time, it is a universal constant. 😛 You and I and others here and others that we know are examples of that other 10%, but still. A vast majority of those abusing controlled substances are worthless bags of flesh and destroy their lives and many destroy the lives of those around them, just because of this crap.
