man i want android so bad gotta wait another year.

You should call Verizon and see if they'll let you upgrade early. A buddy of mine was able to renew his contract and get his new every 2 about 3 months early.

A year is a little long, but you never know. Locking you in to two years of voice plus data may sway them.

*assuming that you're on Verizon and that's the reason you have to wait, other carriers may do the same thing

eBay just released an app that seems to be pretty nice. Also Google has a new "Shopper" app that is kinda like Goggles but shopping-oriented. It works well on the stuff I tested it on.

I'm actually waiting for the Nexus One. I'm on VZW, and they've not given any indication of when it's going to be released. Hopefully, it is the 23rd like I've read in a few places on the internet. See, my birthday is the 19th, so this would make for an exceptional gift. :) Hahaha.

I'm waiting for the VZ version of the N1 too. I was catching up on my podcasts, and Leo Laporte said his verizon contact told him the 23rd would be the day. Frankly I'm hoping that the rumors that the HTC Desire will become the Verizon's N1 pan out.

I've been using Android for a bit now, so I thought I'd contribute.

Pandora - well, it's Pandora and it makes my time at work go by faster.
Alice - Just add the bands (comedians too) that you like and it will tell you when they are in town.
Listen - Subscribe to your favorite podcasts and it will hook you up (also makes the work day go faster)
WordUp! - A fun little word game that I spend way too much time playing.
Aldiko - I found this one from an above post. Very nice! Already downloaded all the Sherlock Holmes books to read again!
Backgrounds - Quick and easy way to find some cool backgrounds.
Craigsnotification - Tell it your area and what you're looking for and it will tell you when it pops up on Craigslist!

There are a few others, but they've been covered in the earlier posts.

up for a couple rooted apps. I still can't say enough good things about mobile defense. My son has lost his phone at least 3 times now and this has pointed us to the EXACT location of it. Even lets you lock out the phone, send it a message and sound an alarm to help you find it. And its FREE!!!!!!!!

Touiteur - Probably the best Twitter app now. I've gone through Twidroid and Tweetcaster. A little bit of Seesmic too. Touiteur all the way now.

My favorites:

WallSwitch (changes wallpapers every X minutes)
Handcent SMS
ASTRO file manager
Beautiful Widgets
Yelp
Quick Settings
Iridium Flares (great if you're into sky watching)
Last.fm (Pandora is buggy on my phone)
CalWidget
NPR News (streaming audio of many NPR programs including Wait Wait Don't Tell Me!, streaming live audio of any NPR station you want, and a station finder so you know what frequency to use if you're traveling)
Zedge (ringtons and wallpapers)
Timeriffic (change settings based on what time it is)
ShopSavvy (like Barcode Scanner, but better in my experience)
AK Notepad
AppsInstaller (install apps that you can't get from the market)
Gmote
Meebo IM (multi-protocol IM client, includes Facebook chat as well)
MomentFlash (for the Samsung Moment only; uses the LED flash as a flashlight, much better than just turning the screen white)
Dolphin browser (interface takes some getting used to, but it has more features than the standard browser including tabbed browsing)
Astrid (to-do list)

Mobile Defense is fantastic.

I bought Repligo Reader for reading PDF books. It works very well.

Have you tried Pandora recently? Mine was buggy but a recent update fixed it.
I also prefer shop savvy.
You can also install apps with Astro, so no need for AppsInstaller.

I was about to buy Tweetcaster, but it took 10MB in process for it's updater. Seems like a leak to me. I tried Touiteur, but prefer Seesmic. The last two are favs so far.

Thanks for the info about AppsInstaller and Astro. That simplifies things just a bit. I like trying apps but I also like cutting out excess stuff as much as possible. Astro seems to do practically everything you could want - it's a file browser, app installer, picture viewer, and it can decompress archives too.

Last time I tried Pandora was maybe a month ago. Someone had posted the exact same thing you did about it being buggy until they installed an update, but even after updating it I still had problems. When Last.fm worked without a hitch right from the start, I decided to go with it instead. I could try Pandora again but I've heard of other Moment owners having recurring problems as well. Do you have a Moment?

Pandora has been working great lately. I used it with bluetooth in my car and I think they had some issues...all better.

Astro also has a task and process killer. It really is a great program.

Nope, Eris.

My problem with it was random song skipping. I would hear 30 seconds of a song, it would skip, 30 seconds, skip, etc until I got the message you can't skip more than 6 songs an hour. All without trying to skip a single song.

Hmm, well that's an issue, but it's nothing like the one I had. On my phone, Pandora would start playing fine, but it would usually stutter or even stop for several seconds before resuming where it had left off at least once every couple songs. That was if I didn't do ANYTHING else. The instant I went back to the home screen, even before I opened any other apps, it would start stuttering like crazy for 30-60 seconds at a time. Doing practically anything caused it to stutter, but it never skipped songs.

I know that Pandora really hates going from bluetooth to headphones or headphones to speaker. I always quit Pandora if I am going to change what its playing through.

Shoot, I guess since it's stickied, I'll do a more comprehensive list of the stuff I have (aside from Maps and the usual stuff).

Cubed <- music player
Simple Last.fm Scrobbler
BetterCut
Handcent SMS
ASTRO
Beautiful Widgets
HelixLauncher <- I don't think you need root for this
DailyStrip
Shazam
Ringdroid
Sound Manager
MotoTorch LED
Colorix HD
Flight Director

Root needed:
drocap2
SetCPU
Root Explorer

Live wallpapers:
Plasma <- so far, pretty good compromise between "coolness" and not causing lag in everything
Logcat
Flying Androids
IFS <- is cool, but lag
Shake Them All <- burns through the battery
Puzzle Blox <- super cool, no lag unless you try to do something while the accelerometer moves the blocks

edit: corrected typo
