My pet rat just died :(

episodic

Lifer
Rest in piece 'blue'. . .

She was about 3 years old and a hooded dumbo rat that was a silver blue and white color.

She had cancer and had been sick for about a week. She was just playing tug of war with me this morning 🙁

She came to her name, played tug of war, and rolled over on command. . . . She spent many evenings on my shoulder.

I'm so sorry.

I had a pet rat I raised from a 'pinkie'... the snake in my mother's classroom didn't want to eat it, and my mom didn't have the heart to leave it in the cage any longer, so she brought it home to me. Hen Wen was a phenomenal little creature.

Funny how an animal with such a bad reputation is really so intelligent and friendly. There is a reason the Year of the Rat is first in the order!

Anyway, how nice that Blue had someone to love her. 🙂

Some of the article above:

About Keeping Rats as Pets

* Rats are intelligent, social animals that can make wonderful pets.
* Easily tamed.
* Relatively easy to care for, but are not low maintenance pets.
* Require a fair amount of attention and exercise time outside of thier cages (at least an hour a day is ideal).
* Rats are very social and do best if kept with other rats. Same sex pairs or groups are ideal. Males usually get along fine with other males especially if introduced at a young age or they are littermates. Keeping rats in groups does not make them more difficult to tame if they are handled from a young age.
* Rats are very curious.
* Many owners compare the companionship of a rat to that of a dog.
* As a rule, males are larger and somewhat lazier than females, and have a coarser coat. Females are smaller and tend to be more active and playful.

neat, says life span is 2-3 years, i couldent do that, get attached to something only to have it die a year later 🙁

Yea this is my 4th generation since I've started keeping them when I was 18. Her cagemate is 3.5 years old and is a baldie (a hairless rat), which is quite old indeed for a hairless. So I can expect to loose her too in the next 6 months or sooner. When her cagemate passes, I'll probably find a new pair.

yeah i had a rat as a pet.

I had got it to feed my python but after haveing it 3 days it was attached. so i didnt feed it to it (went to frozen pre-killed ones after that).

It was a cool rat. i would let it out and it would crawl around my desk and stuff. pitty it died at about 8 months old. but it did give me a bunch of pups to feed baby snakes!

I've never had a rat as a pet, my parents said no. I did do lots of research on them though🙂 They seem totally cool! I've got hedgehogs now instead🙂

How are hedgehogs? I tried to play with one in a pet store once, and got nothing but spikes 🙂

I never understood snakes as pets - they are cold and unfeeling it seems.

well i couldnt have a dog (have severe allergies) and hate cats. plus i think snakes are neat.

Now i am NOT into the huge anaconda (yes you can buy those) or such. I have a few ball pythons and a yellow belly racer (gardner snake).

Its a lot of fun to have the snake around your shoulders when you answere the door.

I've got a regular zoo btw, I have to stay away from pet stores.

1 beta fish
1 hairless rat
2 gerbils
1 cockatiel

Hedgies are the coolest animals, seriously. They're total sweethearts! I've got 9 babies right now and 8 adults. They're goofballs! Very entertaining and clean animals. I don't have to clean the cage very often because they use a litterbox! They go "tubing" too, which is hilarious. They put a toilet paper tube on their head and run around crashing into stuff. Sometimes they put balls in the tp tubes and REALLY have fun! They're such awesome animals🙂 I highly recommend them🙂
