My Pc Keeps Freezen

I don't know why this keeps on happing but once in a while it just freezes up on me.I'm running a Xp1700 with a ecs mobo-120gb hd-512mb ddr 2-24x lite-on cdrw's-lite on dvdrom & a mid size case with 250watts power supply and a extra case fan.🙁😱:disgust:😱🙁

Could be your PSU,the ECS board likes a good high quality PSU,also I would go with something better then 250w.Other things to check are IRQ conflicts, however you don`t say what OS you`re using?

Sounds like the PSU is weak. What kind of ram do you have? That could be an issue too. Oh, and the ECS board isn't the stablest board around either.

Maybe that's your problem, it's too cool with the fan blowing, put a heater in there 😉

What are you doing at the time that it freezes up? Is it after running it for a long while? Overclocked? Old drivers? Tell us something about the machine. Most people's machines will freeze up from time to time, especially Winblows machines. I still hear people having problems with their Windows XP too even though it's the latest and greatest, and has been out for a bit.

Sometimes is freezes when i'm not doing nother also i have the system on from like 11am to like 3am.thats 16 hours a day.Could it be windows xp.i also heard from somebody else that has xp and hes having the same problem.

I'm having similar problems.
I built my PC about a year ago (Iwill KA266, Crucial ram)
and it's been working fine until this week.

I was playing Black & White Creature Isle and after about 10 hours of having the PC on
it froze up on me. I didnt think too much of it at the time. but now it wont stay on for more than 30 mins.

It locks up randomly. sometimes while I"m surfing.. somtimes while I"m defragging.. sometimes while I'm watching TV (in the other room). What I notice is that right when it's about to freeze the HD light goes on for a bit, then it turns off. So I thought it might have something to do with the virus scanner doing something in the background, but I uninstalled it, and it still locks up.

Do Power SUpplies just go bad after a year of working fine?

I had a new AMD approved PSU go bad after only 9 months so they can go faulty anytime and so there`s no fast rule as to when.

Is there a way to test your PSU?

What about it would cause a freeze?
Is it basically supplying a variable amount of power?

I tested the ram using DocMemory & the HD using Maxtor's PowerDiag
& check the Windows system files using
Are there some other tests I can run before dishing out for a new PSU?

Are we certain it's a hardware problem? I like to blame Microsoft for every problem
I run into, so it would be nice if I can also blame them for this headache.

I agree with everyone else. It sounds like your ps. Download Mother Board Monitor (MBM5) and check your voltages.

Almost certainly a power supply issue. Try using a 300-350W quality PSU, e.g. Enermax, Sparkle or Antec. I'm 99% sure that'll take care of your problem.

It's true that the ECS K7S5A (which I assume is the motherboard you're using) is picky about power supply, but in this particular case, that doesn't seem to be the problem. It's rather that your system demands too much power for a 250W PSU to be able to cope.

If we're talking about the K7S5A, then that's wrong. It's as stable as any motherboard.

I have an Abit WX6 (i810) that started locking up, and it had been fine for a long time on it's power supply, I tried it with another power supply and same thing. I have since concluded that the motherboard is toast.

There's not 1 patch on earth that will fix an undepowered power supply unit.

when you say freeze, what exactly happens? does the desktop and cursor stop moving, or is there any error message of any kind?

btw... i agree with everyone else, its most likely underpowered power supply. you should have at the very least a 300W PSU.

Just to add something to this discussion...

I have a very similar problem, and I am using an Enermax Whisper 350W power supply. I've been looking for a solution to this for a little while now, and so far the only things I've heard were about the power supply and the memory.

I originally thought it was my Audigy card, so I took it out, and I've only had one crash since. However, the freezing seems to occur when I am using Internet Explorer and moving the mouse, which leads me to believe it's something to do with the PCI bus. I am overclocked, 1.6A @ 2.13, default voltage, standard heatsink/fan, and it runs consistently at around 35 - 43 degrees celsius, so I know it shouldn't be because of overheating.

The problem is not a Windows XP problem, either, since I was using Gentoo Linux a little while back, and it would do the same thing. It must be because of sunspots or something. Who knows?

Specs, in case anyone cares...

P4 1.6A @ 2.13 (1.5V, Intel Heatsink + fan)
MSI 645 Ultra
Nanya 2x256 PC2400
Leadtek GF3Ti200 64MB
Netgear 10/100 NIC
Linksys Phoneline 10mb NIC
SB Audigy on my desk
2 IBM 120GXPs, 60 GB and 40 GB
Pioneer 16x DVD
Generic 16x CDRW
etc, etc...

i have the same cpu & mobo.. and had the same problem, try going into BIOS and change the cpu/ram speed to 100/100 mhz..
it worked for me.....

but it'll lower performance, but it fixes the freeze.. 🙂

good luck.... 🙂

if that worked for you, it makes me think that problem is that your ram is unstable for some reason or another at those speeds. just wondering dooz, what speed is your ram rated at (pc1600 or pc2100) and what company did you purchase it from?

the problems NDENT is having may also be caused by bad memory... especially if he was running the FSB at 266mhz if his memory or CPU was supposed to be run at 200mhz.

I'm running a 300W AMD approved Power Supply.

I'm gonna pick up a new one (400w) today. I'll let you know if it changes anything.

I did not get a new PSU.

I think I found the problem however.

My DVD player was dead. so I cracked open the hood and played with the cords a bit
now the player is working fine, and the PC's been on all day with NO FREEZES!

So methinks it was just a loose connection with the DVD player that caused the freezes.
