Right now I live in the country (again)... no broadband available out here yet. The Telco RT that services my area is supposed to have a DSLAM installed sometime this spring, so DSL will supposedly be available later this year... and the main CO and RTs north of the CO are now serving DSL... they just need to move south a bit...

The nearest cable drop is 5 miles away - not happening. The only other alternative is a T1 or Satellite (both are cost prohibitive, the T1 much more so than the Satellite).

I actually had a dream, last night, that DSL was activated in the RT down the road... I woke up and was disappointed when I saw the usual blinking green light indicating the signal still isn't there. 🙁

How much is T1? And are there no neighbors that would pay for high speed, ie become a small ISP to fund your line?

I used to be on dialup, but now that I've had DSL for a few months, I could never go back. It's not so much the speed, but the always-on side of things that really makes life simpler for me (not having to coordinare phone line usage or worry about when to download large files). If I ever get married, I'll make sure the wife is also interested in something that would ensure her agreement about any new house being required to have broadband. 😉

I cannot recall how much a T1 was going to cost... some insane amount that I wasn't even going to consider paying. Call your local telephone company for more info, it varies anyway.

Yes, there are still outrageously large latency issues with satellite based internet connectivity. I was strongly considering it... but I decided that it costs too much. I'll just wait for Verizon to get the DSLAMs installed out here.

Hell no. Get the T-1 Line and then resell service to other nearby yokels.

satelite?

I'm not sure if it's still a problem, but satelite used to have HUGE latency issues.

That, and upload = dial up.

Well, there's 2-way available too...

The only benefit of two-way is that it doesn't require a phone line... it's still about the speed of a dial up connection.

Thats what I was thinking also. Have to get price, time he will live there, and what % of people will pay money to have better internt.
Might be worth it and might not.

That would imply that there are others nearby that are interested in high speed internet access...

Well, yes, but I was just pointing out that both types are available... 🙂

You're not going to make enough money from selling off a partial T1 to make it worthwhile. Last time I looked at costs for a full T1 it was above $500 a month. Sure it could have gone down by now. But if you split that 5 ways you're paying ~$100 for a 300kbps (NOT 300KB) connection. I guess if you can afford to pay that much and its all you can get it'd be worth it, anything is better than dialup.

Oh, and not to mention the costs to get the service out to those other people.

well ... It is costly, but not nearly as bad as a T1, how about multilinking 2 phone lines/ 2 modems ... Surely you could find an ISP to do this. It would probably give you enough bandwidth to play online with minimal packet loss ... though you would still have to get used to the 200 or so pings you would be getting.

Otherwise, IDSL, while slowwer than cable and ADSL, at 144K usually, has a much greater range than other DSL forms, perhaps it would be available to you? (though it's probably gonna cost in the area of $100 a month)

Otherwise you could always invite your buddies over for lan parties (though you will miss out on World of Warcraft, or any other online only games you like to play)

Aren't you too old to be playing computer games?? 😉

Yes sir, but that doesn't stop me. 🙂

It's too remote for DSL or cable. There is no wireless in the area as of yet. T1? In my dreams.

I thought I would miss gaming, but I don't miss it at all. It gives me a lot more free time to do more fun and productive activities.

I don't game on the PC anymore (just xbox) but without high speed, just for browsing, I would go crazy.

Maybe convince your neighbors to set up a wi-fi coop with directional cantennas for >1 mi range?

me: if we found the perfect house but there was no broadband can we still get it?
him: yes, but i am running my own backbone.

Yeah that is a great option, probably the best thing you could do. I would make sure a couple of the neighbors wanted it first.

It's really expensive to do that, though...

If there are any folks within line-of-sight, and a few miles, and they have broadband capabilities, I'd see if they would let you create a wireless network gateway between your house and theirs 😉
