I don't think I could survive without broadband. It was horrible going home from college moving from the school's connection back to dial-up. I now have 5Mbps cable from time warner at my apartment. 🙂

Welcome to my world. It's not so bad really, if I want to download something big (20+ MB) I just do it at work.

I went from a T1 line to a dialup speed of 21.6 max three years ago. That sucked, but life goes on. As soon as 802.16 is available in my area, I'll be all over it. No DSL, cable, or wireless available to me (believe me, I've tried), and satellite just isn't worth the high cost considering the latency.

I moved WAY out into the country and obviously have no cable/DSL here. I don't miss it at all. I can barely even get dial-up out here because the phone lines are so old - I get dropped constantly.

I just do more artsy stuff. Much better use of time.

Right now I live in the country (again)... no broadband available out here yet. The Telco RT that services my area is supposed to have a DSLAM installed sometime this spring, so DSL will supposedly be available later this year... and the main CO and RTs north of the CO are now serving DSL... they just need to move south a bit...

The nearest cable drop is 5 miles away - not happening. The only other alternative is a T1 or Satellite (both are cost prohibitive, the T1 much more so than the Satellite).

I actually had a dream, last night, that DSL was activated in the RT down the road... I woke up and was disappointed when I saw the usual blinking green light indicating the signal still isn't there. 🙁

set up a wireless network at a friends house that has broadband. take those little signal boosters that plug into the walls and form a chain of signal boosters in peoples houses till they reach your house in amish country.

i'ts possible right?

not sure if it is, but the latency would be huge

No Cable + No DSL = high ping times, no matter what other alternatives you might be thinking of.

I hope you like turn-based games; you might still be able to play those. If you like RTS, FPS, or any other time of game where ping matters... you're SOL.

Sorry mate.

There are wireless network antenna manufactured that are designed to span miles... (they're directional)

I've heard of several people in situations similar to this, that convinced a neighbor, that could get cable, to let them installed a Wireless antenna on their property, and then they could all connect via a single hop on a wireless network.

Just curious.... what fun and productive activities have you taken up?

Good question.

Well for me, I've started teaching myself how to play guitar, started painting with acrylics, and soon will be building a MAME cabinet.

That's a shame, but as others have suggested, you might find much better uses for your time.

I hate that mentality. WTF? I'm wasting time if I'm not being productive? Everybody's goal is to retire early and sit around doing idle things, but, oh teh noes, don't do that until you're 60 years old.

Maybe there's a wireless broadband provider. That's what I have to use!

My wife is asking me to consider doing the same thing. I told her: no cable line = no house. So far she's ok with that, I hope it lasts.

Just get a T-1 run to your house, the installation is insane but the ongoing costs arent that bad, that is if youre that hard-up for broadband.
