My old bike - an antique?

  1. Oh hell, I didn't notice you owned that puppy. Nice bike!

Thanks!
Yours too!

You have the old sturmey-archer with the coaster brake on the 3 speed or hand brakes?

You going with the 7 speed nexus or the 3 (or 5)?

I've got an early 80's GT mountain bike that I have put thousands of miles on. I have replaced most of the parts over the years.

I'm looking at retiring it(I will let my GF use it) and getting a Motobecane 700 HT mountain bike to replace it. Or maybe even a Motobecane Fantom Comp DS mountain bike but that's a little pricey.

Mine's got hand brakes, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Next will be the same. I'll do more research even before committing to Nexus, let alone picking one of their hubs over another. But, it will be internal hub gearing, no doubt about that. I just want one with the same reliability of the Sturmey-Archer. If I have to, I'll put an old SA hub on a new bike.

I'll never understand the thinking behind putting a fragile derailleur on a "mountain" bike. Keeping the gears in the hub makes so much more sense, especially on rough terrain.

I wish I still had my Orange Huffy with the Mono-Shock!!! That's a true antique. 🙂

If you did, it's doubtful that it would still work...unless you never rode it of course.

Why no pic of the whole bike?

Edit: Ooops I accidentally clicked the chipmunk pic instead of your link.
I didn't know there were even mountain bikes that long ago. I'd say it's a classic.... did you not read the text on your own link?

Ever seen one of these?
