My Nexus S came in

Rooted it with a lot of difficulty (despite the idiotproof XDA guides). I was being half retarded too (hooray for 2 hrs of sleep).

Flashed CM7 in no time, custom kernel. Yum.

I will no longer cry about the lag fest. This thing is FAST. It smokes my Milestone at 1.1 or 1.15ghz even... lol. The RAM issue is huge I'm guessing. Custom kernel obviously helped a bit because stock wasn't that great feeling. When I installed Market it restored a bunch of my apps. ADW felt like a lag fest still. I trashed that asap and went to Launcher Pro. Wow. This is 1ghz. No overclock yet...

Compare to Milestone @ 1ghz:

Interesting because it seems the devices with huge internal memory get this I/O boost?

Edit: Running NS Collab CM7 ROM + Netarchy CFS kernel.

You've got Voodoo Color/Sound and BLN working, I hope.

BLN was causing my Nexus S to reboot. I got rid of it and cyanogen.
Currently I'm using one of the other 2.3.4 ROM's and it's rock solid.

I'm torn. Should I get Sprint Nexus S 4G or wait for Galaxy S2?

Well if you're on Sprint the Evo 3D should be some time next month as the first Evo was released in June but still no firm release date. The Galaxy S-2 isn't going to be released in NA until Q3 which is July, August, or September since they are trying to do a simultaneous launch or as simultaneous as they can get for all the carriers here.

BTW anyone use Opera Mobile? It's fully hardware accelerated it seems and puts the stock browser to shame...

I've been using it for a while now. Seems faster than stock or Dolphin HD, but I don't think its hardware accelerated. It only loads pages faster because the pages are highly compressed from Opera's servers. I did notice that it loads pictures kinda funky, pixelated then sharp.

Edit - Oh, welcome to the good life. :) Those of us with the top end Android phones have been saying its very lag free. :p

On ADW, you were using the free version? I have ADW Ex and its just as fast as LP on my TB.

I used to use Opera Mobile, but with more and more apps making things easier, I've honestly had less of a need to use the browser for anything these days.

Maps, Search, Banking, Docs, News, eBay, Paypal, Reddit, Craigslist, Check vendors, Check tracked shipments, Check movie times, etc... and I haven't even launched the browser yet!

Awesome :D:thumbsup:

And now that Anandtech supports Tapatalk, I use that app for browsing the forums and even saves battery life.

I think BLN has some issues with 2.3.4. Well 2.3.4 has some issues with NS period. I'm on a 2.3.3 ROM (NSCollab) and BLN works fine for me.

I have the EVO and I'm sick of HTC.

I was waiting for the EVO3D but decided to just go with the Nexus S and I don't regret it. Ultimately, I just want easy access to updates and the size was a factor for me. The Evo is a bit big for me cause I keep the phone in my front pocket. The weight of the Nexus is awesome, many Droid users at work commented how light it was. I also thought it was time to get off the HTC Touch Pro 2, did have to pay an extra $20 a month, since I switched to SERO premium but still way cheaper than switching to ATT or Verizon by far.

You know, I hated the Captivate and Vibrant weight, but the Nexus S is about 13g heavier which is an improvement. Somehow the shape of it helps make up for the lightness. Isn't the Droid like 160g or something? I know I liked that weight a lot or even the iPhone's 140+, but the Nexus S is surprisingly nice. The build is solid, so it's definitely good.

Oddly enough I haven't made a phone call yet. I hope the earpiece volume is decent.

My only complaint is TERRIBLE reception.I get anywhere from 0-2 bars at home now. When I pick up my phone, the attenuation drops it to 0 bars. I'm at -103 dB or so. My Milestone was never this bad. There's also an issue with the radio for 850/1900 users. I hope Sprint is OK, but Tmo users don't have that many reception issues.

Another complaint is the inability to use the Toggle 2G app. Basically whenever screen goes off, the toggle app will switch you to 2G. This works for CyanogenMod based ROMs, but it completely fails on the Nexus S. This is actually a good battery saver especially if reception is crappy. EDGE gets much better reception and the fallback/jump to HSDPA will really eat your battery up. Better to just stick to EDGE especially when your phone is on standby 80% of the time as syncing doesnt require huge bandwidth anyway.

The quadrant score results from Voodoo. If you were to run it without Voodoo you would end up closer to 1200 I believe.

I know mine is around 800 without and 1600+ with.

No, Nexus S uses native EXT4 file system. Voodoo would do nothing to speed up the phone. The reason your and other Galaxy S phones need Voodoo is that someone at Samsung made the horrible decision to use faulty RFS filesystem instead of superior Linux standard EXT4 filesystem. Voodoo tries to correct this by converting the data partition from RFS to EXT4. The horrible lag on the Galaxy S is because of the RFS. It's also the reason stock Quadrant score is so low since RFS bottlenecks I/O performance.

Google and Samsung corrected the error by using EXT4 from the start on the Nexus S and Galaxy S2.

Light weight of the Galaxy phones is one of the best feature. It would be dumb for Samsung to make the phone heavy when they have weight advantage over others due to light and thin AMOLED screen. AMOLED makes low weight possible and Samsung is simply highlighting the positive feature which is smart. Thin and light is what everyone is striving for. If Apple had access to the AMOLED technology they would have designed the iPhone to be light as well. They might on their future phone with that new Sharp screen which features thinner and lighter glass like AMOLED.

Galaxy S series is not known for strong signal. But different modems do make a difference and the rom you flashed might have subpar modem. I would try different rom, kernel, modem and see if that help.
