I get your perspective, but I prefer to focus on my requirements rather than tech constraints. A 2-hour charge time is still pretty lengthy, honestly, but acceptable. It takes me 15 minutes to fill my gas-tank today....

Mass adoption will be better once we tech that allows for <1hr charge AND batteries that can handle that reliably.

Do you have your own gas station in your garage? Tesla already has the charge times down to around 1hour with the Supercharging stations. A 200 mile range is plenty for daily driving, you then can charge overnight. Anything over that you can just stop at a Supercharging station and top up while you get a yogurt.

Mass adoption of high current home chargers can't happen without a big change in the power grid of most areas.

A slow ramp up of home chargers is the way it has to be for the foreseeable future.

If OP is worried about battery longevity, can always set the charge rate inside of the car to 40a. Also wouldn't charge to 100% all the time either. You really only need the 80a charge rate if you're going to go somewhere within a few hours or less and need the charge quickly. If charging overnight, makes no sense to charge at the highest rate.

and that .. is thirty grand, right?

lol no, at least next year I'll get 13,500 back in Tax Credits (Federal and State of Colorado)

I'm not worried about longevity, the Tesla Superchargers dump 300 amps at a time. I'm sure the 80 amps my garage is sending it is fine.

Superchargers aren't intended nor expected for everyday use. Remember, Tesla's primary concern is to get mass adoption of vehicles to market. If Tesla tried to warn their customers with flashing lights about battery degradation at every turn here and there, it would discourage adoption of their vehicles. Just remember that the warranty on the battery only guarantees that the vehicle will move, no warranty on the amount of remaining range. It all really depends on the sort of degradation you're willing to live with. Could you handle a 20% loss of capacity over 5 years?

Just out of curiosity, how does the msrp of the car line up compared to previous cars you've bought?

Battery life has a lot of variability on how you use it. If you do a lot of heavy driving in max range mode and you regularly drain it almost all the way down you will loose more battery capacity. If you only charge to 70-80% of capacity and then drain it down to 30-40% of capacity for regularly daily driving you will loose a lot less battery capacity.

Awesome man, congrats!

Did you consider the BMW i8? That would have resolved any potential conflicts... haha.

Will you owe 13.5K in taxes?

Most definitely

It's certainly the priciest car I've ever purchased. The MSRP was ~102k. Before then the most expensive car I've bought was my Wife's Q5 which had an MSRP of 59.7k

I did momentarily, then I remembered that I had two kids 😀. Plus I didn't want to have an internal combustion engine this time around

I don't know why we are giving people who can afford $150K worth of cars a tax break to purchase a $100K car, but I can't fault taking advantage of the offer. 😛

No, but you may have seen gas stations around town. 🙄

Sorry, I don't want to go somewhere and wait an hour to charge my car. That's not good enough. Plain and simple. That's a stop-gap solution.

The only way to make these cars viable today is to charge at home. The OP has it setup the right way. 🙂

How much does that gas station cost you to fill up?

It's a very nice car. I actually see quite a few 85s around the area where I work. There are two parked ouside next to the building I work in.

Honestly considering the Sexual Discrimination she experiences there I'm not surprised at all. I've been trying to get her to go to another company but she's been at ULA since she was an in Intern in 2002 (With Lockheed Martin). So it's going to be hard.

Really man? Why isn't she reporting this to the state? My wife did investigations for a living and she'd have people fired in days.

Straightens people right up in a hurry.

It's ILLEGAL. All it takes is someone on the other side of a room just HEARING a sexually intolerant joke. BOOM, FIRED!

Eh, it's one thing to make jokes that make people uncomfortable. Those laws in regards to that are stupid, could not care less. But when it comes to threatening them like with vandalism, that's a whole different problem and should be addressed.

I dunno, what's the work atmosphere at Microsoft? Can employees have Apple and Google products?

Nice!

The grocery store near my house installed 5 or 6 Tesla branded charging stations (I live in a middle income area of town). I see two 85Ds parked there fairly regularly. Was curious if those stations charge in 2 hours like you said you could do at home?

Sounds like a great world to live in. 🙄

That sounds like it could be a supercharger station. The idea is that they add 200 miles of range in 20-30 mins. Fully charge a depleted battery in only an hour! They're for road trips where you stop for a piss break and fill up

About $25.

In about 480,000 (~2400 fill-ups) miles a Tesla would start saving me money, assuming electricity is 100% free. 😉

Back on-topic...I don't think a Tesla is about saving money. It's about a GREAT car that is on the cusp of technology. For some, the convenience of the charger stations is definitely very good. I still hold that (for me) I would need the ability to charge from home.

OP - give us some impressions after a month or two of driving. I can't wait to see some more information regarding maintenance and upkeep in a couple years on these. The cost of ownership will be interesting to see long-term with the potential of excellent reliability.
