dogs really hate cats that much?

it's not that they hate them. it's just that cats trigger the instinctual urge to hunt and kill (especially when more than one dog is together, triggering the pack instinct). people forget that dogs (cats, too) are carnivores. they kill and eat things smaller than them.

sorry to hear about that poor cat. what a terrible way to go.

Depends ENTIRELY on the dog and how they were raised. I own a rohdesian which was originally bred to herd lions. She's actually SCARED of cats. She's been around multiple cats and runs from them.

Sadly in cases like this it's a zero fault. ALL animals were off leash and unattended.

It sucks...but that's what happens.

cool dog. any pics?

Uhhh? You ever see a cat swipe at something? My dog has a nice scar right below her eye from the front paw of a cat.

yeah tell me about it... someone has never seen a cat fight.

The front claws are their attack claws. Also their claws are used for climbing trees and fences to get away from dogs.

I figured I would consolidate all the ignorant responses into one post. The fighting claws on a cat are the BACK claws. They use their front claws to hunt prey, to hold opponets during a fight and for traction. I have owned a cat for years, I have also gotten into numerous fights with her when she's in a bad mood and I also have done plenty of reading on declawing. What follows is the quickest link I could find in google, your local pet authority should be able to provide the same information in pamphlet form on declawing.

After reading that consider for a moment that you have problaby never seen a cat in a full blown fight with another animal of equal size. When cats fight each other they grab each other with their front claws, bite at each others heads and try to rake the stomach open with the back claws.

Having been in numerous fights with my cat I can tell you there is one position I don't let her get into when she's looking to spar that is a position that puts her back legs in contact with any part of my body (she can tear through denim with the back claws). Do the front paws hurt, ya if they are sharp they do pin prick damage, if they rake you with the back claws though it's like getting cut by a cluster of knives the length of the area they rake.

A cat declawed in the front is at a slight disadvantage against equal opponents but it will make almost no difference in a fight against something that outsizes it (like a dog). As long as you don't take the back claws out there is very little traction reduction (they can still climb trees) and they can still fight.

So now that you all are a little more educated on cats claws, don't think that cause your dog got a scratch from a cat challenging it that the cat was actually in a full blown fight.

I love dogs and cats, but WTF is the owners problem letting a de-clawed cat out side? Esspecially as you say there are tons of stray dogs just running around? and being out of town. Makes me sick :( sorry kitty.

my cat got mauled by 3 dogs a few years ago, they tore her up pretty bad and the vet didn't think she would live even after surgery. She wouldn't eat so we had to force feed her, she fought with us and usually spit up whatever liquids we forced down her throat.

She had some kind of allergic reaction to the antibiotics so started scratching herself to the point where she tore out her fur and got all kinds of cuts. Almost all her fur fell off from the combination of her scratching and the antibiotics.

The vet stitched up her open wounds but one wound was on the side of her leg so whenever she sat down it would tear the staples out, there was a huge open hole on her side for almost a year. She always wanted to go outside and when she laid on the grass the ants would start getting into her open wound and she just sat there and let them.

She's pretty much healed up except for a weepy eye which can't be fixed but shes in good shape.
