Did the van have side mirrors?

I have some advice. Make sure your homeowners insurance is paid up and that it covers all your valuables.

What you described is a burglary. A robbery would have been if you neighbors were home. Also, how does a van/truck knock on a door?

You could set up claymores in the front yard and rig your doors windows and especially you beer fridge with explosives.... May need a mop if you seed your kid to get you a beer and they forget to disarm.....

About 9:30am his friends come over to use the pool and notice his backdoor open. They go to shut it (it never locked since he has lived there) and notice his place ransacked.

They even took his dishes. They had time to load a 60" projection type TV too.

I am looking now for an alarm/video but the cops said the only homes they get robberies in around here have no dogs. They have not had a break in for this if a dog lived there no matter how small.

Pic of wife? + Neighbors wife?

Don't get a monitored alarm if you think the response is not worth it. I installed one of these units at a client's office.

It was easy to wire up, and the tech support was cool. It took a while for the guy to answer but once I got him he figured out what I had, then started firing off an unbelievable series of key commands for me to put in the keypad. It set the delays as I wanted them, programmed the dialer output, everything.
It works flawlessly and when the horn goes off it will attract the kind of attention a burglar does not want. It also dials the cellphone of the facility manager and his boss.
This office was next door to a 24/7 facility, but usually your neighbors will call the cops and come out to take notice. The burglar will beat feet.

Yeah, an alert dog is definitely the best deterrance. Small dogs will bark, but if the burglars KNOW you're not home a large dog will still scare them away.

Additionally, like another poster said, creating the illusion you're home is a good tactic. Light timers set at irregular times are good for when you're out of town.

Mount remotely controlled machine guns under the overhang of the roof, with cameras and lights.

Or put a HUGE tray of tacos with rat poison in them. It will keep the mexicans at bay.
