My wife and neighbor left at 7:30am this morning, I and another neighbor left at 8:30...another one noticed about 9ish that a purple large van/truck pulled up and knocked on his door saying "HE IS NOT HOME".

About 9:30am his friends come over to use the pool and notice his backdoor open. They go to shut it (it never locked since he has lived there) and notice his place ransacked.

They even took his dishes. They had time to load a 60" projection type TV too.

I am looking now for an alarm/video but the cops said the only homes they get robberies in around here have no dogs. They have not had a break in for this if a dog lived there no matter how small.

If anyone has advice on protecting a single story home with a detached garage and 19 windows, 4 doors, running 4 outdoor video camera in humidity (s. florida)...i'd appreciate it.

This thread isn't going to net you any "real" responses IMO.

Weird coincidence, my neighbours got robbed a couple of days ago too. I got really lucky as I wasn't home (at an exam), my curtain was open and from their property you can clearly see into my bedroom. If they had looked they would have seen my Canon 30D sitting on my bed and my Dell 24" monitor and laptop on my desk. I'm insured but it would have sucked to lose that stuff.

If he wasn't home, then it was burglary. Robbery is at gunpoint or knifepoint or something. Taking the property from a person.

Why is "mexicans" in quotes in your sub-title?

Either they were, or weren't.

Or were they posing as 'mexicans?'

I have very little to steal, fortunately.

That's scary.. :(

I've been overly conscious about leaving the blinds open in my room. If someone looked in, they would see 3 laptops and my desktop with 19" LCD.

Wouldn't take much effort to walk off with them..... Makes me want an alarm system.

not trolling assholes.

My neighbor always has people coming and going on his property. Some visit his pool, some clean it, he has a garage with tools and a passcode.

The mexican 'quote' was the lady saying it. It's in the police report.

Supposed the cop said their is an MTV show that brags that it takes 7 mins for an alarm company to react and an additional 22mins once the call comes in for a cop/para/fire dude to show up.

Did the van have side mirrors?

This happened at my house (suburbs of NY) - a car was parked out front at 7:30 AM with a guy sitting inside. My mom smartly took down their plate. They tried to break in later but the alarm went off and cops showed up and nabbed them. With the plate they got the spotter as well. Apparently they followed my parents home from the Bronx.

If he can't get a plate he's likely screwed. For protection get a loud alarm and some cameras to cover your street and door.

Rod iron over doors and windows or rolling shutters works wonders on break-ins. Weekly 30 pack block watch parties help get neighbors to bond and watch out for each other. Creating the illusion that somebody is home always helps. Keep a small radio near the front door playing a talk radio station when your not home creates the illusion that you have an elderly relative at home when you?re off at work.
