I love how it is so politically incorrect to ever think about getting a woman something that helps with cleaning, cooking, sewing, etc. If I (I'm not female) had a vacuum that sucked, a new one would be a welcome gift. Heck, even a vacuum that is better than the one I'm currently using would be a welcome gift.

My mother was anything but a house wife and I'm pretty sure she would love a vacuum as a gift.

It has nothing to do with "enforcing 1950's gender roles" and everything to do with the person you are giving the gift to.

Sorry, but you get a present that the person will like and use. If his mom would like and use a vacuum then it's perfectly fine to get her that. It would be insulting to her to base her gift on anything other than what she really wants.

A grown son's gift to his Mom doesn't have to be romantic. Between adults, useful if GOOD.

whoa.. much respect to her!

I will say that i give as much respect to a housewife. Its not as easy as people think (though far to many do sit around and do shit). my mother was one and i can remember her busting her rear cleaning, cooking, etc. even when times were tough we had a good dinner (everything was homecooked) and clothes were mended and cleaned.
