you know, i'd like to give that a try. but no where in sight around here.

wal-mart

they don't have german castrol here at walmart. autozone I thought was the only retailer in the states that had it... and none here. Hell, my walmart here barely has any mobile 1 ever in stock...

Our new Pilot is every 7,500 miles. I change my 90 accord oil every 3,000 though as it's got 200,000 miles on it (this is a guess though as the speedometer hasn't worked for 18 months!).

The original owner's manual of my 65 stang recommends oil changes every 6000 miles, that was 41 years ago! 7500 miles is nothing.

rtfm?

Well, the dealer has its own service schedule which basically has oil change/tire rotation and all that every 3000, and some extra stuff every 6000.

i get everything at the 3000 for free, and i forget how much i pay at 6000, but its not much. so manual, or not...its not like i'm paying much for service...

and mine is a 2004, dunno if its different

Damnit change your own oil. If you want tire service, just get America's Tires which rotates you every 5k. Basically, it's the best maintenence program you could be getting ou tthere. Beats Costco.

If you're worried just change it. It won't hurt anything to change the oil before you need to.

The reason to change the oil at 3000 miles is because of the build up of acids and other products of combustion, and breakdown of the oil. If you have a new car with no blowby you can probably change your oil at 6 or 7k miles with no problems. If you are using a good synthetic oil maybe 10k miles.
But if you have an older car with more than 100k miles I would definitely change it at something like 3k miles.
And I don't believe that regular oil is much better than what we had a few years ago. Of course the manufacturer is going to tell you not to change the oil very often-they want to sell you a new car!
Does anyone remember the BMW that tuned itself? They got sued on that one.

The first oil change on my new vehicle is 12k miles. I was more than shocked.

I knew a guy who never changed his oil then traded in his car at ~25k. He never had a problem. :)

Good question: How often should I rotate my tires?

I've owned my 3 now for a year, and it's never been into a service bay. I am scared as 9 times out of 10 it comes back from the dealer more screwed up than it went in!

Between 5-10k miles. If you buy them at Boyd behind the McDonald's on Virginia Av near the airport, rotation is free ;)

Wow. 7500 miles - do cars really need such frequent oil changes these days? Wonder what technology they're using to require such precise lubrication.

My experience these days, is that 10k-12k is typical, with 20k being common.

In what cars? Car companies that have tried that have owners that come back with sludge problems, early gasket and seal failures, etc...

I am a auto tech and I would never say 10-12k is typical, but i would not also say 3K either.

Sorry to revive an older thread, but I'm a n00b when it comes to cars. Should I take my Mazda3 into the dealer for it's oil change or can I just take it to the oil change place at our Wal-mart? I'm at about 6000 miles on it now so it's almost time. I drive about 400 miles a week...

The only thing missing with all of the replys is whether the non-recommended oil change intervals will void your warranty. It's probably the only thing that matters if you aren't planning on running your engine over 100k. Modern cars are robust enough that you can typically go that far without an oil change. Not that you should, but you could.

Well, I plan to get it changed at around 7500 miles which follows the maintanence schedule listed in the manual. I'm just wondering if places like Wal-mart are OK for oil changes on newer cars.

I change my own oil, because I worry about the competence of the people who work at the cheapo oil-change places. Mind you, sometimes the dealers are just as bad.

I change my oil at around 5k...it's got a lot of miles on it, so I don't want to push it all the way up to 7500, but 3k IS a scam. Not an expensive scam, granted, but still a scam.

I just got my first oil change in my 06 mazda 3. I took it in at 1100 miles. I brought my own mobil 1 5w/30 synthetic (cause it was on sale at costco, didn't have 5w/20).

The guy gave me some speach about how mazda puts some special additives into the oil and that your not supposed to have it changed till 3500 miles. I told him to just change the damn oil. Do they not want my business?

Anyway i'll probably change it as the manual says from now on, just wanted to do the first change to get rid of all the break-in oil. And they didn't have any problem with putting in 5w/30 vs 20 so i dont think it makes a whole lot of difference in that aspect.

Oh, and it took them an hour and a half to change my oil! only cost $19 with the filter at least, but still...

I do exactly as the manual says. No problems.

How could you have done 46k mi on a Mazda 5?? i thought the car is just released a few months ago.

anyway I change oil for my Mazda 6s every 5k mi because 5k is easy to keep track of.
