Did you guys get the new Steam to load correctly in wine? I get mine to the point where I can login, but instead of bringing up the steam menu, it crashes. :(

Also I really like the Gnome desktop - much cleaner and snappier than the KDE one in SUSE and things are looking up!

No offense but you must have been living under a rock if you thought SUSE didn't also have Gnome (which is default IIRC).

Sorry for your sh*tty-at-best experience, but I installed SUSE 10 and it automatically detected both my CK804 onboard and Yukon ethernet.

Installing NVIDIA drivers was a breeze. BTW, ATI's Linux drivers are crappy from experience on my other PC.

Then I was able to start quake2 via wine (could have done it natively also) on my first try. I also got RTCW installed fine. Audigy 2 only worked with an ALSA reinstall which was quite trivial. All this in 1 or 2 days of off-and-on working with it.

Even the damn NUM LOCK!

You're saying num lock didn't toggle? There is something worse wrong with your system.

Heh, I always get a kick out of these threads.

[What chipset is this WLAN hardware? Again, some hardware companies won't even talk to us, so don't complain to us in those cases]

I'm kind of guessing the average user won't know this either. I remember when we had to know this kind of thing in DOS. Boy, I miss those days. Wait... no I don't.

[Again, please tell the manufacturer to either put in the effort to make quality drivers for Linux too, or freely give us access to the necessary documentation, like all manufacturers should be doing in theory.]

I wonder why the OEM "should be doing this in theory"? Which theory is that? Is it the theory that says it's better to have a dozen different drivers for your hardware floating around? I agree it's always better for the tech support people to have to figure out which freeware driver you're running before they help you.

[This is what happens when you let engineers run things. Most differences in opinion get ironed out smoothly, and those that don't blow up in everyone's face. And then there's the various metaphors, like the airline metaphor ]

I think that metaphor is a little weak. It would be more like... when you board the plane you are given a seat, four bolts, part of a wrench (but the other part is standard and freely available), a bundle of wires, and the telephone number of a guy who has the instructions. When you get back to your slot you find yourself surrounded by fifteen passengers in jeans and propeller caps who aready have their seats assembled, and think you're a n00b.

[It's a way of ensuring that the best technical decisions are made]

I probably needn't point out that the best technical decisions often result in single-digit market share and a squad of venture capitalists marching in with slick hair, broomsticks, and tubs of vaseline.

[But other then that seems like the experiance of a typical newbie struggling with random hardware whose manufacturers have provided no decent Linux support for. ATI, your Belkin (not the belkin company, but the chipsets that your card is using), etc.

Funny how you thought that alsamixer is hidden and the option for Audigy 2's digital out was hidden. It's pretty standard fair. ]

Heh.

[For example, you called vi "awful", but if you understood it's history and purpose, you'd know better.]

I'm pretty sure it's awful, even if you understand the history and purpose. The purpose, of course, is to edit text, which should be hard.

[While I wouldn't recommend Linux(be it Ubuntu, Fedora, or Slackware) to my parents, anyone who claims to be a professional in the IT field and has such huge amounts of problems as you obviously had has probably made a wrong turn somewhere.]

Maybe he was trying to view it as an ordinary user... which the average user is.

[1) You did not do any research
2) you expected a platform change to just work without doing any research ]

An ordinary user would do this.

[Linux has great support for new hardware. I don't know what your talking about.

Linux just doesn't have great support for _random_ hardware.]

I'm still parsing this. I'll get back to you.... ok, I think it means: Linux has great support for some hardware.

I guess I'll stop there. Had my fun. Honestly, I don't know why Linux guys can't just enjoy their O/S on its technical merits, instead of pretending that it is so mass-market ready that only a drooling fool could fail to use it properly.

If hardware manufacturers did the right thing, this wouldn't be an issue.

They won't have to deal with it. They release the docs, the F/OSS guys write and support the driver.

vi is awful because it's easy?

Yes it does. Pick a random piece of hardware at my house. :)

I don't know why people that don't like Linux feel the need to act like it's the worst thing on earth.

Show me a thread posted by a bunch of Windows people entitled: "How do we get our act together and defeat Linux in 2006?" You might find that on an MS newsgroup, I suppose.

Non-sequitor.

The thread was about gaining market share against the Windows market. That in no way conveys the thought that Windows is the worst thing on earth. I don't think a serious Linux user would take that thread (or similar threads) all that seriously.

have you read that thread? most of the linux users post with the "I don't want to replace windows, windows sucks, my OS has already surpassed windows for my purposes".

Oh, and VI just edits text, and a porshe just moves people...
