My latest "injury": sensitive nipple

I'm not sure if it's because I started wearing those sweat wicking shirts for the past 2 weeks or what, but after 2 days in a row of running, my right nipple is extremely sore. I kept looking down while running to make sure my nipple wasn't bleeding. It's quite an unpleasant sensation.

Now even wearing my normal street clothes slight brushing of my undershirt against the nipple is painful because it's raw. I felt around and there are no lumps or anything there.

Is this caused by those sweat wicking shirts? Will this stop happening? Is there a way to prevent it or help it heal faster?

The friction is likely causing some sort of irritation or abrasion on the skin. Personally, I would treat it like I treat any other abrasion or sensitive skin in a high-friction area - put mole skin over it. The mole skin will prevent any friction from occurring whatsoever. After that heals, you may want to rethink wearing your special shirts.

I've had the issue only after running for 2+ hours. May want to put some moisturizer/vaseline to keep it soft and allow it to heal.

If it continues to happen, apply a band aid over it before running.

I know somebody who gets the same issue. I think any clothing could cause that after extended running. Women don't usually get it because we're wearing sports bras. Take care of it, and then put something over them next time -- some kind of lubricant glide stick stuff would probably work.

Is mole skin some kind of bandage?

Will a band aid stay on while I'm sweating?

BTW when I ran today I was wearing a cotton t shirt, and before today the nipple was getting sensitive but not painful.

Google is your friend. Bandaids don't stay with sweat. Moleskin has always head up for me. I've used it for both blisters and abrasions and it works great.

Yes, band aids will stay on while sweating.

I put bandaids on to prevent this exact problem when I ran my marathon, and had no problems with them staying on. YMMV.

Body Glide works well as well. I use it on my thighs when running.

I have tried both bandages and Vaseline, and I can safely say that Vaseline is superior...for most runs.

In my experience, for shorter runs (under 1hr 15min or so), the bandages stay on. For the longer runs, Vaseline is awesome (good for underarms too).

However, for long runs in the rain or snow, I haven't found a good solution. For 2 hour runs, bandages get wet and fall off, and Vaseline tends to wear off after a while.

I may have to look into this "Body Glide" stuff.

Well, I used to get blisters on my heels and do sprints. Bandaids would fall off the first set of many. Moleskin always stayed so I have just stuck with it.

I used to have this problem when I ran. I'd put tape over my nipples (I think duct tape) and this prevented them from chaffing.

That's pretty much what moleskin does without you looking like a stripper 😉
