Why'd you pick gentoo?
up to date, blazingly fast, and a lot more hands on than mandrake or redhat

mandrake and redhat are both so fvcking bloated!!! :| i used redhat 9 for like a week and hated it
got stuck dealing with rpm issues on the first damn day
rpm = ass
portage = god

Not to be offensive or anything, but it appears you've been using it for about 30 minutes now, so I don't know if you're qualified to say that yet 🙂

Have you got X running on gentoo yet?

I wish you good luck with X. I tried gentoo once and never got it to work.

I've been pretty happy with fink for OS X. Much better than RPM, but I don't know how it compares to ports from gentoo or BSD or whrever it came from. It uses apt-get from Debian, and it's own system for getting and compiling source, which basically amounts to typing "fink install appname"

this is actually my second try with gentoo (first try was with 1.4 rc2, now it's 1.4 rc4) and i never was able to get it to work the first time (couldn't compile kernel)
from what i've noticed, it's improved a fair bit in terms of ease of install, now i just need to get x and kde working. :Q
