My journey to successfully game under Linux (and overcome Microsoft's Stranglehold)

Momentum is building leading into the launch of the Steam Machine.

I now also backported LibreOffice to 25.8.

This is my kind of OS, everything is stable out of the box, install only what you need and upgrade (backport) to new version what you deem necessary.

Fallout 4 with all the updates they have done, runs much better on Bazzite than 11 pro. I've been spending more and more time away from windows. I think today I will start out the new year by trying CachyOS on either an all Intel or All AMD box.
How has this worked out?

Today I manage to use a cisco VPN connect to my work desktop and run a virtual desktop. I did have a couple of hard locks and it turned out to be (according to chatGPT reading the errorlogs) a bad combo of ibus+KDE+remote input bug, which could be solved by uninstalling ibus. It seems to have solved the problem.

So far, so good. Gaming package included heroic launcher and MangoHUD, along with Lutris, Steam, etc. I chose the default KDE Plasma since I am familiar with it.

It is working with my Xbox BT controller so far. Unlike Bazzite; I needed a USB cable plugged in. Or it would continuously connect and disconnect. It might work for a short period = unacceptable.

Already enjoying it not treating me like I am on a Steam Deck. Installed on a 12600kf - 32GB DDR4 4000 - RX 6800. Spider-Man Miles Morales runs great 1440 high, stays at the 120 fps cap quite a bit.

I am going to convert my Bazzite box now that I am certain it is superior.

Converted this Bazzite box. MIcroslop is now getting very little of my time. I will keep one system on windows for now, as I have a few games and movies I own on through their store.

Used the Firefox extension for my VPN. With it up and running, not much else I need from windows anymore.

I can always buy Gears Reloaded on Steam when it gets dirt cheap. I think I have the movies linked on Vudu, so I think I can finally break the chains.

I was an Amiga guy way back when. Bummed me out in a major way, when the games section started to disappear at Best Buy, and I ended up forced to move to IBM compatible PC. Ditching MS after all these years is somewhat cathartic.

PCMR sub is blowing up with pro LInux threads today. MS handing over encryption keys to the feds, is the latest incentive to ditch windows I guess.

Had no issues adding Amazon, GOG, and Epic with Heroic. Playing Shadow of Mordor GOTY from GOG currently.

LMAO there is always in xkcd -

Is this the bitlocker thing? I'm less concerned about that bitlocker issue(well tbh I'm utterly unconcerned as I dont run windows on anything now) than the whole we'll encrypt your computer as standard and make a ridiculously obscure password for it that there is no way that you'll remember than them letting law enforcement gain access to your cloud data with a warrant. I've always assumed that cloud data is insecure and that encryption where you share the keys is only as secure as the most insecure entity you share the key with. Plus the whole ransomware guys exploiting it.
I get the idea behind bitlocker but for most people its just going to be more of a PITA than of any utility.

Honestly, if you aren't trying to play something that the devs aren't actively blocking on Linux you should have minimal problems.

The biggest learning curve with Linux is learning when to stop fiddling with it! (That maybe a me problem though!)

Yeah, that's why learning how to run VMs are really useful in that step. Although it doesn't help to much when trying to set up a gaming rig.

That's it.

What is weirder than roasting microslop, is the Linux users roasting each other's distros. Until most of the people posting about Linux are normies like me, and not hardcores that come off as incel weidos, it will never have mainstream appeal. Perhaps Valve can do it. As with smartphones, it becomes more about the device than the OS running it.

Can confirm.

I spent over 2 hours with chatgpt trying to get my VPN to work via GUI. It was educational but futile. Never got past the logo with a spinning animation. It is because it was not finding my login info. Regardless of what we tried. Yes I am anthropomorphizing chatgpt. 😛 Same experience I had with Fedora based Bazzite. Simply could not get the GUI to work. The extension for Firefox works perfectly, so no worries.

Distro wars are weird! My main needs of a distro is a fairly new kernel (which they all have) and the latest Gnome DE (just for HDR and VRR) but that's just because I'm comfortable with Gnome. Apart that I find that I can make all the distros work the same!

Ignoring everything I said earlier this is why I tend to use something vaguely related to Ubuntu as that's the distro that most companies aim at with working software.
My VPN has a nice GUI that takes a couple of clicks to install, my powerline stuff has a control app that takes a couple of clicks to set up (not that it's needed after the initial config)... For general software support lots have .deb installers for Ubuntu.

Yeah, debian is also "always" supported, so it makes many things easier.

When I get more comfortable, I'll try installing one of the most popular distros and see how it goes for gaming. I used Ubuntu and Mint for data recovery on failing windows HDDs in the 2010s. Both were easy to use. My copy pasta fu is usually more than up to the task of getting most things done. PIA VPN defeated twice now. Even with HAL 9000 taking point.

Yeah pro linux threads or anti-MS threads that turn into linux discussions have been increasing on that sub for the last few months.
it's crazy how much bad press windows is getting lately

I think it is an old Pokemon meme about hurting itself in its confusion? They brag how much code is being written by AI, then release a statement later, admitting there are wide spread critical bugs in core components of the OS. Correlation does not equal causation, but sometimes, where there is smoke, there is fire.

Being overt about selling you out to the feds without a fight isn't the best PR either. These corpos e.g. MS and Nvidia, don't even care anymore. They have created enormous captive markets.

The push back from windows chuds, makes no sense. Some are obvious bot accounts and paid to post. Others are doing it out of tribalism, to be contrarians, or maybe just to protect stock prices? Regardless of motivation, it is bad and they should feel bad. Linux is the closest thing to altruism you will find in the PC space. From what I've read, most have little to no telemetry. And the vast majority of what is collected is anonymous and used to improve the distro.

As to my own 15+ years of dipping my toes in to free, open source operating systems; That's over. Perhaps due to Valve's involvement, Linux gaming is where I needed it to be to commit. As I wrote before; Fallout 4 keeps crashing on 11pro with max settings, when it is rock solid on CachyOS. I have had issues with windows breaking old games that used to run perfectly fine before. Or the game updates breaking the game on current windows.

Not getting sales pitched on one drive, office, linking my phone, or allowing a bunch of extra data collection, just to make it to desktop feels good. So does setting up a new build and not needing to drop money on another license.

I think that it's indisputable that Windows keeps getting worse and Linux keeps getting better.
Whether Linux has got better enough or Windows has got worse enough for people to change over is an individual choice but I feel pretty safe with that first comment.

As I heard someone say. It's not as much as I want to get into Linux as they are pushing me away. Once it was my computer and I could do what I wanted with it, they gradually pushed us farther away until we didn't want to comply anymore. And personally moving my data from US tech companies to European instead also played a part in it.

Those were pretty much my thoughts, plus I was a bit curious about Linux anyway.
