Flat response is good in that every frequency will have the same volume, but in reality you probably like your music with a little more oomph in the lows and maybe highs, just as a preference. This, plus the fact that you will have different response curves in different rooms makes things more difficult. Yes, you can get a calibration mic and whatever accompanying equipment to EQ the response curve to suit your room, but this is getting rather extreme unless you're creating a dedicated theater room for instance. Some commercial receivers even come with a mic and built in calibration electronics to do it for you, the Pioneer 1014 for example is a great budget receiver that does.
