my home theater

Well, another month and I'll have my own place! I've gathered all the stuff I need for my own home theater. Here it is:

http://www.kaido.net/temp/home_theater.jpg

19" Orion television
Symphonic DVD player
JVC VCR
Sherwood RD-6105 5.1 receiver
5-piece Philips/Magnavox speakers
Harmony 659 universal remote control
Wood/glass home entertainment center

It's not super-duper or anything, but it's all mine 🙂 I actually just got the entertainment center from a friend for fixing their computer. The television only has RF input, so I have the DVD player hooked up via composite to the VCR, the cable tv hooked up to the VCR, then the VCR hooked up to the tv with coaxial. The VCR/cable tv hooks up to the receiver with stereo RCAs and the DVD player has a coaxial digital audio cable. It's a little tv but the picture quality is surprisingly good for only having coaxial input.

The speakers are only a little better than the tv's built-in speakers, but the tv was damaged when we moved, which made the speakers sound horrid. I don't have a subwoofer for the system because I'll be in an apartment for awhile and I don't want angry neighbors. The two rear speakers (on top of the front speaker on the right) are going to be wall mounted (they have a hookup like a telephone to hang on the wall). I'm going to build some speaker stands for the two front speakers. Here's my idea:

http://www.kaido.net/temp/stands.jpg

I decided to use 4" x 4" pieces of wood for the posts, however. I'll be painting them flat black so the tv's light doesn't reflect off of them.

So I'm pretty happy 🙂 My very own home entertainment system! I have a couch to go with it, I just need to clean it up really well.

I'd like to build a 12" sealed Shiva subwoofer or a 15" using a Dayton sub, but that's out of the picture until I move out of the apartment and into a house. Hopefully by then I'll have saved up to get an SVS cylinder 🙂

I have a 12" CerwinVega Sub, but I don't use it after I moved to an appartment, and the 808 gives me enough bass, so I should actually sell it.

Cool, nice score on the free cabinet

Are there holes on the bottom of the front speakers that the drywall screws are going to fit into?

nope, the drywall screws are for connecting the top piece of wood to the wooden post. they'll be going in both the bottom and the top. I didn't want to glue the stand together because I'll want to be able to disassemble them easily to I can move them.

so basically, I'll cut the flat piece of wood into sections for the top and bottom, cut the wooden posts for the stands, paint them black, then use 4 drywall screws on the top and 4 drywall screws on the bottom to connect them together. the speakers will just be placed on top. I don't need spikes or rubber mounts or anything since they're just cheapo speakers. although, maybe I should get some rubber feet for the speakers, just for kicks...hmm.

and i have some matching JBL rears not shown in the pic.

nice! what kind of television is that? I've been looking at LCDs, plasmas, rear-projections, etc., but I still like CRTs the best lol. Of course, maybe I should try looking somewhere other than Best Buy...

What do you guys use for audio for your television signal? just straight stereo, or do you switch it to Pro-Logic II or something else?

I have my HK do Logic 7 cinema for TV. It's basically doing the same thing that pro-logic II would do.

Sometimes I switch to 7 channel stereo when the audio is of really strange/low quality and Logic 7 ends up doing to wierd stuff with vocal volume and positioning.

its a 50" samsung DLP series, the HLP line wiht the HD3 chip in it (the HD2+ chip was too much $$ for me at the time). honestly out of all my research I did, my opinion is as follows:

DLP > LCD > Plasma

and thats rear projection LCD, not flat panel LCD. DLP just looks the best IMO and the samsung is breathtaking. you can ask anyone who has seen the samsung TV and they will tell you the picture is amazing. honestly i don't think CRT's are worth it anymore. the newer TV's are just all around much better. the viewing angles are better, you don't need low light to view a great picture, they are about 1/4 the weight. however they are more expensive.

if you don't plan on moving a TV for a long time and don't want to spend too much $$$, then nothing is wrong with CRT projection. however i can tell yo uone thing. my brother's roomate just got a 65" mitsubishi CRT RPTV and it looks good, however my brother as well as his roomate still think my 50" samsung has a much sharper picture. that doesn't mean the mitsubishi isn't good, its still great, just not as sharp.

EDIT: oh for audio, i just switch between 5.1 and normal stereo, depending on what i'm doing. some stuff on TV is in 5.1. i usually don't watch TV with my receiver on thogh, i mainly use it for DVDs and XBox. nothign like halo 2 in 5.1 🙂

Well, I already know I like DLP. My front projector is DLP and it looks fabulous. However, I mostly use it for business and just watch movies with it on the weekends and stuff, so I need a good tv for my place.

What model is your tv? How good are the viewing angles? How does regular television look on it? Does regular television do bars or is it stretched? I mostly watch DVDs and regular cable tv, so that's what I'm concerned about.

it has a few different modes. i just watch normal TV in 4:3 mode w/the black bars on the side. regular analog cable is watchable. it definitely looks like crap though compared to HD. as people said in your other thread, analog tv is going to look like crap on any tv that size because the tv is so big and good that it will clearly show the flaws of the signal. the model is HLP50W i believe. I know its the HLP line and its 50", but im like 99% sure thats the actual TV. the viewing angles are fine. sometimes i'm even at my computer as seen in that pic, and i can peek over and see the TV fine. also, even with the lights on in my basement, the picture is not dull at all. but of course, its better to watch it in the dark.

oh and what tv stand is that? also, where would I go to look at that tv? I have a circuit city, best buy, and tweeters within 30 minutes of me, would they be there?

hey, you gots my tv! i'm curious as to what stand that is as well. need to buy a stand for my tv. btw, i have this tv right across my glass patio doors and i can watch the tv fine when i have the blinds open and the sun is shining through.

No disrespect, but what is the point of posting such sub-par equipment? The remote is the best thing you have as equipment.

must take a pic of my home cinema one day....lol....

i use Pro Logic II for my TV if its in Nicam Stereo......if its normal stereo or mono i use DTS:Neo 6.......

only thing i sometimes just listen in stereo to from TV is the music channels.....thats cuz my sub is both hi and low level wired and in PLII or DTS:Neo 6 you dont get the full bass range delivered to the front L & R channels.....well, not as effectively...

my hifi if ur bored at work....
check www.monitoraudio.co.uk and go to pages for models Silver S6, S2, SFX and SLCR speakers......the S2's are for DVD-Audio, SFX's for movies (two pairs SFX for 7.1)

then goto www.rel.net for my subwoofer, ST range, Strata 5 model (oh god damn its beautiful)

then to Denon for electronics, 3803 amp, cant be viewed anymore tho on Denon site, and 3910 DVD player....beautiful piece of machinery, absolutely beautiful.

finally to http://www.optimum2000.com/ for my rack, my model is the AV40, but i got strange leg lengths to accomodate things..lol

TV sadly is just a 28in Widescreen Philips CRT atm, gonna keep CRT for TV usage, but get a Infocus Screenplay 5700 projector when i can afford it for films/PC use...heh

Decent setup, I'd drop that 3803 and move up to something nicer, perhaps....5805? I have a 5805 and 3805 in out house both coupled with their own 3910.....Talk about HT heaven.

i only bought it a little over a year ago, sadly i cant afford to upgrade that quickly, otherwise i would definitely match the 3910 with the 3805, mostly so i could use Denonlink for DVD-Audio leaving my ext-inputs for my computers soundcard....

mebbe in another year i might consider upgrading....the 5805 is well out of my league at my current wage position...lol

took me a year and a half to get together all you see.....lol

edit: btw, i cant emphasize enough how much you guys in the USA/Canada need to find a dealer who can demo REL subwoofers....they are serious stuff, the Q range are beltingly destructive to the floor for movies and the ST range are sublime for Hifi......
