And all the memberships are being aguired by Planet Fitness. Now there is a new Planet Fitness opening up around the corner from me in March so it seems to be a good deal but I went on their site to check them out and they have this policy called "No Judgement Zone". What it means is that there is to be no grunting, dropping of weights or judging others (what ever the fuck that means). It seems to me that they want the old ladies and fat asses to sign up and not be intimidated by Muscle Heads. What really caught my eye is that they have an alarm that goes off if somebody grunts too loud or drops a weight!! WTF???

Now I'm not a chronic grunter and try not to drop weights but once in a while it just happens. I don't now how I would react if an alarm went off and the gym manager came up to chatise me for grunting. If I'm in the zone I might bite his head off:laugh: but I probably wouldn't as I don't want to embarrass myself any more than that fucking alarm already had:shocked:

This is obviously a marketing ploy to try and get soft bodies who sign up and then only go a couple of times yet owe for years on a contract. Since they'll pick up my contract and most at my gym will be switching over I'll give them a try. It should be interesting, maybe for some interesting posts here.

on the first day you go there, make sure you do snatches. grunt really loud and then slam the weight on the ground. yelling 'light weight babyyy' or 'yeah buddyyyy' might also help.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of. (not it being a Fitness Center but it being like Curves) The gym I go to now is more of a Fitness Center than a Hard Core Gym. There are a Few Muscle Headed Juicers that are members but most of the members are normal people just looking to stay fit. In fact I'd say that most of the members aren't really that fit at all which is ok, at least they are trying to get in better shape which is cool.

I generally find grunting to be unnecessary and annoying, but the whole mentality behind their policies bothers me. They are rules set up for and by people who really aren't serious about training. I wouldn't pay a dime to people who told me that I couldn't deadlift, use chalk or have a gym bag with me while I was training.

I think most gym don't allow gym bags in the training room, if that is what you are implying by gym bags. People steal weights, albeit I don't know how, but I suppose it depends how much they are stealing.

It just sounds like this "fitness center" is trying to market to a different crowd. No biggie. No doubt your current gym is offering an out on your contract, try out the new gym and if it's not to your liking take the way out.

I've personally never really encountered yellers or people that drop the weights on the ground, there are few muscle heads at my gym and they never scream or drop the weights. Actually one did, but it was no big deal. I think these days unless you go to a place that is strictly a gym and isn't a family friendly fitness center you will run into these rules. Because ultimately in the end the way the gym makes money is by getting new members, and if new members are intimidated by the gym and the people there they aren't going to pay. Yet the whole intimidation thing is all in their heads. People psych themselves out so who's to blame?

Time to find a new gym it looks like. When you are lifting a lot of weight, deadlift, squat, bench whatever, grunts are good! I remember my tennis coach in high school made everyone grunt when they were serving basically to prove a point about giving it your all. Those rules are plain silly. I'd get a 1 day membership and do snatches and see what they do. You NEED to drop the weight at the end, its part of the exercise. Maybe they have list of approved gym exercises at this fairyland resort. Maybe manicures after the workout? I'd say go find the meatheads in your area and find out where they work out, those are the real gyms :)

Yeah it'll probably be ok, I just found some of the rules, especially the "Lunkhead Alarm" to be a little weird (actually stupid). If it sucks there are a lot of other gyms in the local area I can join.

LOL, I just thought of this, at my current gym we have about 5 members that are Hells Angels, I'm wondering how the staff of Planet Fitness are going to like them?

My university rec center was the same way but they never actually enforced it. I doubt many places do actually. I'd go there for a while and see what happens.

A lunk alarm? That's ridiculous. How does a place like that stay in business, much less have a huge chain?

Don't worry, RD......they don't yell, they bring over the cattle prod, and give you a reason to grunt!! ;)

They put one in the shopping plaza where the old Walmart used to be, here, the only people I've seen coming or going from there are the over 55 crowd and dough boys. Oh, and my dental hygienist said she goes there. They have spammed me with at least 10 mailers about "$50 down $10 a month and no contract!" starting shortly before they opened.

Seems the biz model is catering to the same people that buy the billions in home exercise equipment every year.

I belong to Planet Fitness....let me ask you a question...

So you would rather be at a hardcore meat-head gym just to boost your ego? Because that what I am getting from this thread....

I am a bodybuilder and competing in October. Its not the gym, it the way you use the machines and weights.

Stop judging and just lift.

Calm it son, what you should be getting from this thread, especially from me, is how I think the rules for that place seem a bit Draconian. I also read they have a dress code that prohibits certain attire that is commonly seen at gyms such as bandanas and the like.

Since you are a member there you can really enlighten me about the place, the atmosphere, the rules, the equipment and the other amenities. I would appreciate it greatly.

I am far from a hardcore meat-head at the gym, but yeah there are times on my last rep that I make a bit more noise than an average breath. Every once in a long time I drop a weight if it was a bit too much or if something starts to feel not-right- If a huge alarm went off and embarrassed the shit out of me, I'd be pretty upset. Has nothing to do with judging.
That said- hopefully it's not a big issue for you- that "rule" does seem pretty ridiculous

Sorry for sounding rude just the way I protray myself sometimes.

Ill be real for a moment, most of the people in there are of older age or are young and try and max out every time.... you know the ego crowd. I grunt all the time and not once has the lunk alarm gone off. In fact I am friends with the manager and workers and i asked once and its not even hooked up!

Think about it, you slam 450 lb deadlift on lightly padded cement while a 90 year old man is doing 5lb bicep curls............he'll have a heart attack. They have pad you can use if you think you are going to not put the weight down easily. This is no golds gym but itll get the job done at a friendly cost. I would love to go to golds gym but do I have an extra 50 bucks a month....negative... lol

Dress code....I have A shirts there all the time and no one stops me.....I wear a hat, gym shorts.....

1. Dont call me son please...

2. Some machines are fine to use and helpful...

So all that "No Judgtement Zone" stuff is mostly hype. I guess it should be ok since most of the members on that new Planet Fitness will be the members of the gym I go to now.

It will be nice to have new equipment with a new locker room in a building whose roof doesn't leak everytime it rains or snows plus the monthly dues will only be $10 a month or if you want unlimited tanning, $20 a month.

How the hell are you supposed to lift without grunting? Can't lift to your max, therefor you cannot lift.

Go look for your local weight lifting club Red Dawn. FortifiedIron.com should help you in the search and they'll be able to recommend the best gyms for you.
