My goodness. Three Maxtors dead with same problem.

I ordered a batch of 25 Dell Optiplex GX260's. They shipped with the half height DiamondMax 80gig HD's. I had 10 of the 25 go down with drive failures within a couple month span, about a year into the life of the machine. It was like clockwork. Get one replaced. Another would die. Replace that, then another would die. Rinse and repeat x 8.

Not cool.

Wow. This happened to us, although not on that scale but in approximately the same percentage. We've had the HD in 3 (of 10 total) GX280's fail within 1 month of each other. Have you found anything out regarding the cause? I have not been able to find much except for something talking about poor airflow and cooling in these particular models.

I just checked and the gx280 have the same 80gb Maxtor drive.

They never admitted anything to us. The only time I've had Dell openly say "Yeh, this part sucks" is the 20/40 gig TBU units in our Poweredge 2500/2600 servers. Those things popped every 6 months. They were so bad, when you called into the support line, there was a special prompt for "If you are calling about a tape drive, press X".

But as far as the Optiplexes go. Nope. No concessions or admissions on their part. Even though they could look at the company history and see that it was a pattern.

I wonder if these drives overheated. I suggest purchasing hard drive fans or rigging an extra case fan to direct air (it is not prudent to use the word "blow" in ATOT) over the hard drives for cooling.

The PC is in an A/C room. And the case door is usually off, I really cant see them overheating much. I dont even access these drives a lot. 😕

iv got 2 maxtors going out the door now on me. sometimes they dont show up in bios sometimes they do. they like to make noises sometimes too.

Except for the noise part, thats is what happens to me. Disappears into the unknown. SMART diagnostics pass though.

Do you have the hard drives set to shut down if they are not used after so many minutes?

desktop hard drives are not meant to be used in a server style enviroment. So running them full speed for a year will probable put a hurt on their life span. Mind you some will last longer some less. But in your case, it seems to be less.

<--- has a 4 year old maxtor drive still running in grandmothers system. 🙂

I had 2 Seagate ATA66 drives running for 3 years, and an old Mode 4 IBM drive running daily since June 1997. Also, no they are not set to shut down. They have been running about a year straight non-stop.
'Cuda IV and 'Cuda V are practically unstoppable. They're slow as death, but as reliable as SCSIs. The newer ones are on the high end, but not quite SCSI level.

If you run a server, use RAID. ATA RAID 1 is simple, effective, and a data-saver. Seagate, Samsung, WD--all good. The worst thing is warning. I hear all these things about Maxtors just up and dying. I've never had a Maxtor HDD--they weren't great back when Seagate's sucked (Medalists, yum...). However, I have yet to encounter a drive that offered no warning. SMART would complain. There would be occasional boot errors. The drive would make wierd noises, and so on, and it would gradually get worse.

This has mostly been w/ Caviars and 'Cudas, though. Nobody I know has yet had a failed Spinpoint P80 (and of course not yet P120) or 'Cuda 7200.7/8.
