Ex-girlfriend beaten, hit by truck, court told

A Wilmette man was ordered held in lieu of bail Thursday after he was charged with attempted murder for running down a former girlfriend with his pickup truck this week, prosecutors said.
Gilberto Archer, 20, of the 100 block of Dupee Place was angry and blamed the ex-girlfriend for his failure to graduate from high school, prosecutors said during a hearing in front of Cook County Circuit Judge Garritt Howard in Skokie.
The 18-year-old woman suffered numerous injuries, including swelling of the brain, a fractured jaw and lacerations. Prosecutors said she was transferred out of the critical-care ward at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston on Thursday morning.
Archer also was charged with three counts of aggravated battery Wednesday after he drove his truck onto a sidewalk and struck the woman as she jogged in the 2200 block of Beechwood Avenue in Wilmette, Assistant State's Atty. Beth Kita-Neslund said.
Archer's next court appearance is scheduled for June 6.
Kita-Neslund said Archer got out of the vehicle after hitting the girl with his truck, picked her up and threw her to the ground, then continued assaulting her with his fists and feet. Archer also punched a 69-year-old man who tried to intervene, Kita-Neslund said.
Archer fled on foot but was chased down by two men who held him until police arrived, authorities said. He also is charged with assaulting one of those men.
Kita-Neslund said Archer and the woman were students at New Trier High School in Winnetka and dated between summer 2002 and October 2002.
She said school officials reprimanded Archer several times after the relationship ended because he refused to stay away from the woman. Archer was also suspended twice for the same reason and said he dropped out of school in early 2004, Kita-Neslund said.
Archer told investigators that he committed the attack because he blamed the woman--and was angry at teachers--for his failure to graduate from high school, Kita-Neslund said.
"When he saw her, he felt hatred," Kita-Neslund said.
Archer's attorney, William Hedrick, said that his client was having an "apparent psychotic episode" when he attacked the woman and that it was "a completely unplanned event."
"I think there are strong mental health issues here," Hedrick said.
The judge granted a defense request that Archer undergo a psychological examination and said he could not contact the woman.

Holy crap, if I ever saw a guy beating a girl like that, I'd kill him. Jesus Christ that's not right. I hope she's all right. Sounds like she got hurt pretty seriously.
