In view of horrified neighbors, a Wilmette man struck a New Trier High School student with his pickup truck Tuesday, then got out of the vehicle, attacked her and punched a man who tried to intervene, police said Wednesday.
Gilberto Archer, 20, of the 100 block of Dupee Place, is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery and is scheduled to appear in Bond Court Thursday in Skokie, according to the Cook County state's attorney's office.
"We saw him beating her," said Patty Edmonds, who with her husband, Gerald, heard a loud thump Tuesday morning and ran to the front door of their home in the 2200 block of Beechwood Avenue in Wilmette.
They saw a black pickup truck that had plowed through the front yard and into the Edmonds' driveway, where it struck a van occupied by an adult and two children there for a piano lesson, she said.
A young woman, who had been walking in front of the Edmonds' house, was lying face down in the yard, and a man was striking her repeatedly with his fists, Patty Edmonds said.
"My husband couldn't let that go," said Edmonds, standing near the tire tracks in her yard. "He did intervene but got hit twice. I called 911."
Police received at least five more emergency calls from residents shortly before 8 a.m. on the usually tranquil street, officials said.
The student, an 18-year-old senior, was in stable condition in St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, said a woman at the victim's home who identified herself as her mother.
The young woman apparently knew Archer from New Trier, where he was enrolled two years ago, though authorities did not know the nature of their relationship, police said.
Archer did not graduate from the school, said New Trier Township High School District 203 Supt. Henry "Hank" Bangser, who declined to elaborate.
According to police, Archer parked about a block away from the girl's home, "apparently waiting for her to leave for school."
"After the crash, he battered the victim with his hands and feet until a citizen intervened," a police statement said.
Archer allegedly struck Gerald Edmonds, ran off and was followed by two men, who tackled him at Thornwood Avenue and Hunter Road, police said.
The men restrained Archer until Wilmette police arrived, officials said.
Police declined to release the names of the victim or witnesses.
Some neighbors complained that it took a long time for the police and an ambulance to arrive.
"When you're watching a violent crime, your perception of time is altered," Deputy Police Chief Brian King said. "Our records indicate that the first officer arrived within three minutes and the offender was immediately taken into custody."
Fire officials could not be reached regarding the response time. But King estimated that the ambulance arrived within four minutes of the first call.
Neighbors said they were relieved that more people weren't hurt. Had the incident occurred a few weeks ago, elementary school-age children would have been walking to nearby Harper School for before-school programs, said Julie Whitty, who lives next to the Edmonds' home.
the thing is that my friend hasn't told me the whole story probably because he's freaking out right now. What can i do?
edit: omg, i saw this guy around school last year!!! That guy is pathetic. Blaming others for his own failures.

A Wilmette man was ordered held in lieu of bail Thursday after he was charged with attempted murder for running down a former girlfriend with his pickup truck this week, prosecutors said.
Gilberto Archer, 20, of the 100 block of Dupee Place was angry and blamed the ex-girlfriend for his failure to graduate from high school, prosecutors said during a hearing in front of Cook County Circuit Judge Garritt Howard in Skokie.
The 18-year-old woman suffered numerous injuries, including swelling of the brain, a fractured jaw and lacerations. Prosecutors said she was transferred out of the critical-care ward at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston on Thursday morning.
Archer also was charged with three counts of aggravated battery Wednesday after he drove his truck onto a sidewalk and struck the woman as she jogged in the 2200 block of Beechwood Avenue in Wilmette, Assistant State's Atty. Beth Kita-Neslund said.
Archer's next court appearance is scheduled for June 6.
Kita-Neslund said Archer got out of the vehicle after hitting the girl with his truck, picked her up and threw her to the ground, then continued assaulting her with his fists and feet. Archer also punched a 69-year-old man who tried to intervene, Kita-Neslund said.
Archer fled on foot but was chased down by two men who held him until police arrived, authorities said. He also is charged with assaulting one of those men.
Kita-Neslund said Archer and the woman were students at New Trier High School in Winnetka and dated between summer 2002 and October 2002.
She said school officials reprimanded Archer several times after the relationship ended because he refused to stay away from the woman. Archer was also suspended twice for the same reason and said he dropped out of school in early 2004, Kita-Neslund said.
Archer told investigators that he committed the attack because he blamed the woman--and was angry at teachers--for his failure to graduate from high school, Kita-Neslund said.
"When he saw her, he felt hatred," Kita-Neslund said.
Archer's attorney, William Hedrick, said that his client was having an "apparent psychotic episode" when he attacked the woman and that it was "a completely unplanned event."
"I think there are strong mental health issues here," Hedrick said.
The judge granted a defense request that Archer undergo a psychological examination and said he could not contact the woman.
