My friend won his first marathon today

One of my friends, who is my primary training partner, ran his marathon today. Despite his unorthodox training method (lots of intervals and no runs longer than 15 miles), he somehow managed to win the race today in a time of 2:37!!! Afterward, while giving an interview, he mentioned that the race made him "kind of tired." Bastard! 😀 Major props to my friend!!! Now if only training with someone made you as fast as them....!

Just goes to show that hours of long, slow cardio aren't necessary, even for endurance athletes. Intensity FTW.

Well, he still averaged around 12 miles a day... You definitely need the hours of cardio for marathon training; he just did a little more every day instead of bunching it all into long run a week.

He did a lot of 2 mile repeats in 10:30, and 3-mile repeats in 16:30 in preparation. Lots of half-marathon to marathon pace stuff. Personally, I would rather do long runs and long, steady pace runs, but it seemed to work for him! Of course, with even better training, I can see him going sub-2:30

wow, that's amazing.

Hm, I agree, but what is with the random comment thread bump in H&F lately? It's no biggie, I'm just curious why people are finding older threads.

I didn't even know it was a month old!

Congrats to your buddy mate!

As pointed out by you, you still need mileage to get a sweet time.
