I have a friend who was recently told he has herpes simplex a (oral herpes) during a full std screening. At the time he said that he wouldn't ever be with a girl in any way that might communicate the disease without telling her first. However, he has in fact not went through with that. His reasoning is that "everyone has it" and that 80% of the population has it already. Now this sounds like crap to me. Anyone know more about it?

He's right, but I think it's actually higher than 80%...

[EDIT]I'm finding estimates from 100 million to 250 million in the US with HSV1, & another 40 million + with HSV2...[/EDIT]

I wouldn't call anybody that behave like that a friend.

You can either tell the girls he's with, or leave it alone and let him live his own life.

Personally i would tell the girls, since i wouldn't consider an ass like that a friend.

80% is too high a percentage. That would mean 8 out of 10 would have it and out of all the people that I know, none of them have herpes.

Yea.
1.) He has Type-1 Herpes, which most everyone has experienced in their life. (i.e. Cold sores) Type-2 Herpes is Genital Herpes, which affects between 200,000-500,000 people.
2.) Acyclovir, Famciclovir, or Valacyclovir are used to treat herpes, and have been shown to be effective.
3.) Have him pray that he doesn't develop Herpes Keratitis

I've read that upwards of 90% of people have the antibodies for HSV1, the virus that manifests itself in the form of cold sores/fever blisters. From what I understand wanton oral behavior can result in genital HSV1 if the carrier isn't cognizant of the PAINFUL SORE ON THEIR LIP!

I really wish people would call it herpes rather than something sounding harmless like a "cold sore." I've known people to openly play with cold sores on their lips and then proceed to shake hands with others. They're entirely ignorant as to what it is, so I don't think they'd think twice about having some oral play.

That said, I don't think I've ever had a manifestation of HSV1, but I've never been tested for the antibodies either.

It has nothing to do wiht being clean. Oral herpes, the majority of the time, is not transmitted sexually. You can get it from sharing a drink, kissing someone, etc. Only 40% of the people who have oral herpes actually get fever blisters.

I've never had a cold sore, and I'd rather nto have them... On top of that, oral herpes can be transmitted to the genitals, so you better tell your friend not to go down on his boyfriend/girlfriend without telling them first.

I see what you mean but I've never gotten them before. Aren't there occasional outbreaks on those w/this type of herpes?
