It all happened March 11, 2005 at approx. 9am EST. He was travelling northbound on a major highway (407 ETR) in Toronto, Ontario. A UPS truck and Pepsi truck travelling in the southbound lanes connected with one another. One of the trucks was sent airborn into Northbound traffic. Traffic was probably movin between 100Km/h and 120km/h. His life changed at the moment of impact. He had a passenger in the vehicle as well.

His life was saved by a paramedic who punctured one of his lungs to drain the blood that had accumulated. He has suffered 2 broken femer(sp.) bones, a broken shin bone, a broken foot, a compund fracture on his left arm, a broken wrist, 2 broken forearms, and a broken left elbow. Basically, he broke every limb on his body. He also suffered a puntured lung, and spleen damage. Surprising enough, no head, neck, back injury....he will walk again.

He was in ICU for 3 weeks on a 10mg/h morphine drip, so remembers very little if anything at all....probably a good thing. To this day (May 12, 2005), he remains in the hospital, but a rehab hospital now. He is working on getting his mobility back, but I'm sure time plays a major factor here. On his left elbow, there is so much metal in there, that calcium has grown over his joint and locked his arm in place, he will need yet another surgery to take care of that in about 6 months from now.

Passenger suffered a couple broken ribs and a black eye, he left the hospital the same day.

Well, I'm off to pay him a visit shortly, and sorry, no cliffs notes.....take the time to read.

EDIT: title

also, thank god he lives in Canada. If he was American, he would be paying for this accident for the rest of his life.

Thanks for taking shots at America in this thread about a tragic thing happening about a guy's life. So pathetic. Sigh, I this thread will not turn into another America vs. Canada flamefest even though some people are itching that happens.

Guess politics have to be involved in every thing we do or see. :(

By the way, good luck to your friend, a speedy recovery and god bless him and the passenger.

Medical and lawyer bills. He'd probably be stuck with tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills if not more and would have to sue the trucking companies for payment.

EDIT: Canada has nationalized health care. He won't be paying much at all.

I don;'t think this was a knock at Americans, at least I didn't take it that way. I think he was reffering to our free health care. ;)

From what I understand, paramedics are not trained to "punture a lung", but the guy that showed up was pre-med so he knew how and what to do to save his life.

This has to be one of the most idiotic posts I've ever seen,

So how will we eat food, buy clothes, put gas in our cars if trucks were abolished?

Oh right, trucks are evil.

It wouldn't hurt to have a high-speed rail system on this continent. If done properly, it could cut down on a lot of cross-country truck traffic.

Ouch. Hope he makes a full recovery. BTW, I didn't know paramedics could do that much. That's pretty impressive.

Then why don't you fund it? Or write to DOT or FHWA?

We can barely finance our civilian railroad services in this country, and even those are in the red, can you imagine setting a multi-billion dollar system?

With a country this vast, its almost impossible for that to happen. Remember, we have so many cities and so many people, so what works for other countries cannot work for us.

We do have railroad cargo transportation, but the demand and supply is so high that all the trains in the world cannot transport the goods by themselves.

Also imagine the infrastructural strain it would cost this country to set up a huge railroad system specifically for transportation of materials.

No...his accident was March 11. How could he have been in ICU for 3 weeks if the accident was yesterday? ;)
