OK, so seriously. I had mental issues in the past. Many of you feel like I still have them now. That is not open for discussion in this thread.

I'm going to DC in two weeks for the ATOT meet up. I want to take the train from here to Boston. My friend going with me wants to fly. She knows I can't handle flying right now. I'm a lot better than a year ago though - a year ago, I was so much of a freak, that I couldn't even bare sitting on a train for 30 minutes, or in a car for over an hour with another person (if I wasn't driving). I'm better about those now. But I'm not ready to fly.

I suggested to my friend that she fly like she always does, and I'll take the train down Thursday night so I can enjoy Friday and get some work done. She can meet me down there Friday, and we'll both take the train back Sunday, or she can fly home and I'll take the train.

She's having major problems with this. She says she gets claustrophobic on trains. How is that different than me having a fear of flying? And if so, then why can't we just take our own preferred method of travel and meet there at the same time?

I know this is a rant.

Why are you afraid of flying? Is it something with your brain or have you been in a crash or something? And I've never heard of anyone being afraid of a train ride, that sounds really mental to me.

Seriously....and how the hell is flying any less confined than riding a train? I think it's just a convenient (aka bad) excuse.

Anyway, OP, maybe take the opportunity to start tackling your issues with flying? Go to a doctor, explain your ordeal and he/she will probably be willing to prescribe some xanax or valium.

Uhm. I don't take mental drugs, sorry. I get over things the natural way, like I've done in the past.

So you don't drink?

The natural way? What is that, avoidance? Don't kid yourself, you're not getting over anything. As someone who is not a doctor, I advise that you need two things:

1) Firmly ingrain in your mind the fact that thousands upon thousands of flights are in the air every day, and very rarely is there an accident. If you flew every day, on average you would not be involved in a fatal accident for 20,000 years. I know you've heard flying is safe before, but hear it again. Your fear is stupid. As stupid as being afraid of clowns, lollipops, or grasshoppers. It's all in your head.

2) Because it is all in your head, get some xanax or other medication to allow yourself to accept these thoughts and feel relaxed the first few flights you take trying to get over this fear. See a doctor.

Don't be too proud to seek help. You seem to be with this talk of only accepting "natural" cures.

go get some xanax or prozac or whatever the kiddies are taking these days. pop a couple and just relax. you will be traveling with someone else, so that should take some stress away. very short flight too, hardly enough time to have a full on freakout anyways. you GOTTA face this sometime, and its clearly straining your relationship with your lady friend so just suck it up

Take a few Xanax pills about an hour before the flight and the next thing you will know the person next to you telling you to get out of his way because you're at your destination.

Think of it like surgery. It's gonna hurt. You can prove what a man you are and either skip the surgery and die or let the doctor cut you open while you're awake. Or you could take get druged and sleep through it like 99% of people do.

You suck at staying out of trouble.

Seriously. In your other thread you said you never portray a holier than thou attitude... I do believe you just dismissed that. Learn some discretion, ass.

OP: Maybe it's time to try to overcome your fear? How long is the plane ride and such?

Its an hour. i think I'm going to do it.

Yes, I only accept natural cures. And my fear of flying has nothing to do with flying.

I've decided to go through with it anyway.

No. I don't take medicine.

And yes, I'm going to do it.

Lets look at this for example:

Well, you don't have to go through 3 hours of baggage searches and patdowns by the Gestapo, the scenery is nicer, you can get up and move around much more readily, you're not breathing canned air for hours, and in a pinch you can go to the very back of the train and get someone to gallop up on a horse and make your getaway Old West-style.

Double that in Europe, where the train is almost as fast as flying. Of course, there's less chance of finding a horse that can gallop fast enough, so you'd have to use a helicopter Mission Impossible-style.

Good job man ... go for it, it won't be that bad. :)

Also unless you don't drink for some very specific reason you might try just a glass of white wine during the flight ... it'll relax you with virtually no ill-effects.

Chances are it will take you just as long to fly as it would on the train. That one hour flight becomes 4 hours once you factor in the time it takes to get to the airport, check in, wait in security, go to the gate, wait for takeoff, deboard, wait for bags, etc.

BTW, you are flying to DC just for the ATOT meetup? Dang you are one dedicated ATOT'er

man...@ the DC meet, people are going to harass you all night about that..

flying is the safest form of flying ever. Chances of you dying in broad daylight w/ very little traffic is much higher than flying. Driving that short distance to the store? your life is in danger moreso in that scenario than flying. A stroll down the park? nop, you'll be more likely to die there than flying.

but this argument has been beaten to hell and back then back to hell again..and back yet again...

of course i was scared a bit the first time I flew.. I was a kid, and only saw news about planes crashing. I flew to nearly all continents (*shakes fist @ south america, australia, and antartica..well, hopefully I can set foot to those places someday; 2008 hopefully..please..*goes talks to supervisor to beg*) and been through pretty bad turbulences (you feel yourself get tossed from your seat..if it weren't for the belt, i'd probably would've flew a bit off my seat). It's not bad, and you get to meet some of the most interesting people around the world if you fly a lot.

don't limit yourself. flying shouldn't be a fear. base jumping and other extreme sports are stuff to be a bit scared about. flying in a commercial liner isn't.

Who the hell gets claustrophobic on a train and not a plane? Trains are slow but far more enjoyable than planes. Way more room, and if you score a "sky car", it's tons more relaxing.

Tell her you have some weird mental thing, you hate it, but there's nothing you can do about it and that's all there is to it. You cannot fly, you may spaz out and have homeland security lock you up, so you need to take the train.

I agree with this, but we live downtown, so the trip to the airport is about 15 minutes. Also, this is more "practice" than anything - she's right, how am I going to go to Belize this Summer if I can't even fly an hour?

I am not scared of the plane crashing or me dying or anything like that. I am scared of being "out of control" for a long period of time.

For someone who fears a lack of control, your posts indicate that you aren't really the type of person to take control of a situation either.

Out of control? You ask ATOT for solutions to everything, when are you ever in control?
