OK, so seriously. I had mental issues in the past. Many of you feel like I still have them now. That is not open for discussion in this thread.

I'm going to DC in two weeks for the ATOT meet up. I want to take the train from here to Boston. My friend going with me wants to fly. She knows I can't handle flying right now. I'm a lot better than a year ago though - a year ago, I was so much of a freak, that I couldn't even bare sitting on a train for 30 minutes, or in a car for over an hour with another person (if I wasn't driving). I'm better about those now. But I'm not ready to fly.

I suggested to my friend that she fly like she always does, and I'll take the train down Thursday night so I can enjoy Friday and get some work done. She can meet me down there Friday, and we'll both take the train back Sunday, or she can fly home and I'll take the train.

She's having major problems with this. She says she gets claustrophobic on trains. How is that different than me having a fear of flying? And if so, then why can't we just take our own preferred method of travel and meet there at the same time?

I know this is a rant.

EDIT: Flight booked. I'm flying.

EDIT2: I DID IT!!!

EDIT2: FLIGHT IS TONIGHT. Nervous as anything!

Why are you afraid of flying? Is it something with your brain or have you been in a crash or something? And I've never heard of anyone being afraid of a train ride, that sounds really mental to me.

I did. I'm not getting the most positive responses back.

Well the obvious answer is you two reach some sort of compromise, but it sounds like shes gonna be mad no matter what unless you fly with her, so basically you have to figure out, can you live with her being mad at you for not flying with you?

Seriously....and how the hell is flying any less confined than riding a train? I think it's just a convenient (aka bad) excuse.

Anyway, OP, maybe take the opportunity to start tackling your issues with flying? Go to a doctor, explain your ordeal and he/she will probably be willing to prescribe some xanax or valium.

I thought it would be cheaper to take the train anyways?

Really though, as your friend, she should understand and respect your boundaries. If she doesn't, then you should start to question your friendship a bit. You're not comfortable flying ATM, just like she's not comfortable on the train. That may change in the future, but that's how it is right now.

Get there on the train and meet up with her. Everybody wins.

Uhm. I don't take mental drugs, sorry. I get over things the natural way, like I've done in the past.

Tis what I offered.

And for those who think I should be "medicated", my fear of flying is not about flying itself. This is why it used to apply to trains and car rides. I got over those, naturally.

The natural way is asking everyone here everytime you need to make the smallest decisions in your life. What if you leave Boston for DC and start thinking DC is better, are we going to be telling you what to do again?

You suck at staying out of trouble.

Seriously. In your other thread you said you never portray a holier than thou attitude... I do believe you just dismissed that. Learn some discretion, ass.

OP: Maybe it's time to try to overcome your fear? How long is the plane ride and such?
