If you talk him into getting the AMD & he has any trouble whatsoever, you'll never hear the end of it.Many people have no desire to try another brand.

"Not really, an Athlon XP 2400+ will dominate a 2.4GHz P4 (533MHz) in SPECviewperf 7.0 (just look at our motherboard benchmarks, THG's benchmarks and any other reviews around the net)."

Yes, we can see that, but the question is why? I'm not claiming the benchmarks results were achieved inaccurately, but that the benchmark itself is suspect. If you look at all the results and don't scratch your head a bit, you should probably be doing something else besides reviewing motherboards.

"I'm not sure what Anand meant by the statement you quoted though, that's something I should ask him."

I don't see where the confusion is here about his comments. Just look at the benchmarks. In the Spec 3DSMax results the XP 2000+ is beating the P4 2.53. Then you look at the actual 3DSMax benchmarks run by Anand and the P4 is winning by around 20%. Look at the DX-7 results, the 2000+ is beating the P4 2.53 by 40%. That doesn't raise a red flag in your head? Show me one real world application where anything near those results would occur. There is definitely something peculiar going on in the SPEC benchmark. Looking at the results it does not look like a good CPU benchmark.

I say just let him be. Its his money, its his life, and you've tried your best. Its not as if you have to use his computer, and even though its slower and more expensive, its not a lemon, and its still perfectly usable and very fast, if a bit overpriced. Some people just cannot be changed.

And after owning a Radeon 64mb VIVO ... I'm in no hurry to use ATi again.
I'm still using a Radeon 64MB VIVO and have never had a problem with it. Unlike nvidia and the "infinite loop" problem from a few months ago.

In my opinion, all the hardware on the market (or nearly all) is just as stable/reliable/unstable/unreliable as any other. Spend your money to get the features you want/need, don't worry about brand names.

We're living in a golden age, and suffering from an embarrassment of riches.

I run Intel and AMD / Ati & Nvidia, sell Intel and AMD / Ati Nvidia.

If you are on a budget, there is no getting around AMD. For budget graphics both ATI and Nvidia don't give and take that much. Get into the higher end and pricedifferences level off and it is up to the customer to decide or he/she lets me decide what would be the best route.

Although I must say I have sold 4x as many AMD systems than Intel P4 based machines.

Actually, around the 2.4 GHz mark (the P4 2.4B and the XP2400+, the prices are about even. Its a toss-up.

Not to mention, this is personal preference. I personally have both.... I tend to go high-end Intel or low-end AMD--honestly, where the company's strengths are (nothing can beat a 1600+ at its price..... but the high end Intels are nice... especially when it comes to heat).

Don't worry about it. Its his money and his time. The university I work at won't buy anything AMD--because they did once (ONCE!) and the stability was atrocious (this was awhile ago). I've tried to convince them to try again--but they don't want to do so.

So, what's the difference from this and someone whom only will buy say, AMD and Matrox? Or Cyrix and ATI?
rolleye.gif

If everyone thought the same way, bought the same, lived the same way, man, wouldn't that be a mess! Not to mention very boring! I've always bought whatever I decided I wanted at that time without regard to any "brand name". Whose to say what is better or easier for someone else? All you can do is give your opinion and allow them to make their own decsion, it's not anyones place to force anyone else or even attempt to force anyone else to buy or do something just because it's YOUR choice or MY choice. Every person is different and honestly, that's a very good thing!;)

Exactly. Which is exactly what I meant when I said up above, "I wonder if you'd have the same complaint if the guy insisted on using only AMD."

I'm still confused as to what this guy is "missing out" on. The P4-2.4b is not slower than the Athlon, and the prices are comparable. The Ti4600 is an excellent card that will run everything, at a lower price than the 9700 PRO.

Could it be that VBboy is actually the hardware racist here, because he INSISTS on AMD and ATi? ;)

What motherboards does he buy? Because its one thing to be loyal, its another to be stupid. If he's buying P4s and 4600s thats fine, but not if hes sticking them in some bargain special from TigerDirect...

Besides, it means that he's really just not paying attention. AMD is impressive compared to a few years back, and ATI has been FORCED into improving their products/drivers as a mean to not die off. If anything, get your friend to start supporting ATI so nVidia picks up the pace...

Did anyone NEVER buy Intel again after their fiasco with the cacheless original Celeron? Come on :) After realizing the cachelessness (whew) of the CPU, I returned it and shortly after that got the 300A version, the much faster and well-overlcocking one. So don't call me a racist :)

Wait, I think I am a Sony racist. My second Sony monitor is expensive and sucks, the Sony monitor of this friend of mine also sucks, so hmm... Still, I am basic my decision on experience, not something I heard or read once or twice.

Well then, why do you even care? Are you also this way if he buys a different make or madel car than you prefer? What about if he eats at places you don't care for? ;)

As for the money end of it, again, why should/would you care or let it bother you? I bought a chevy 3/4 ton pickup last time simply because I decided I liked the looks of it better than the Ford or the Chrysler/Dodge, it was considerably more expensive, but, I simply liked it better so I bought the Chevy. Same thing happened about 2 years ago when we built a house, I decided on Peachtree windows. They basicly looked the same in a lot of ways and were both triple pane, but, I liked the Peachtree better than the Anderson or Pella so I bought them.

It happenes everyday and will continue to, don't worry about it or bother yourself with it is all I'm saying, different people, different tastes!

Perhaps he simply wants the oppisite of you because he resents you shoving your prefered brands down his throat!;)

No, I just keep telling him to be OPEN-MINDED. I don't even recommend a particular product anymore, just the idea that there is more than one fish in the sea (according to Eminem's song :))

First off, I tried pulling my trailers with an Escort or Camery once, but, it just didn't work very good!;)

Second, well, if you truely mean what you say you're telling him, it shouldn't matter to you what he buys because to do otherwise is hypocritical of what you just stated!;)

I also have had alot of problems with Sony's electronice, from CD player, to Disk Drives, I try to avoid Sony products period, maybe it was just bad luck, but I don't buy Sony products anymore.

Keep them coming, especially general reasons to consider an alternative brand. For example, if you are a Pepsi lover, would you reject Coke without even trying it? Or would you reject a gay orgy without dipping your tip in first? :) (Sorry, I've had a few too many in me - beers, not tips!)

Now let's not get ahead of ourselves here. We both know you don't drink anything alcoholic other than Arbor Mist.
The Arctic Silver fumes must be getting to ya. ;-)

users vs power users, if you will. even in my old xt, i ripped out the 8088 and put in a nec v20 proc. for a lot of people, the headache of compatibility of certain brands have tainted them for life. perhaps its closed-minded ness, perhaps they aren't mechanically inclined and don't like toying around inside the case. for others, its all about the bank/buck ratio. my first vga card was ati, and it was a piece of crap! all of my nvidias have always worked. though ati has done a lot of work to get back into the race in the past few years, it takes time for people to shed the brand loyalty.

things that are more expensive aren't always better quality, but many times are. i guess some people are more likely to take risks, or save money... its not something that a page of numbers can do to change his mind, he'll just have to use the machine for a while and see for himself that it runs nicer, etc...

the other day, my bro bought a emachines (gasp!!!), and i was quite surprised that it worked as well as it did. not that it was fast or anything, but that it was stable...
i guess when you go in with low expectations, its bound to beat them.. but even then, i'm still likely to buy one for myself, so i guess i'm being a hyprocrite and contradicting myself left and right, but i'm trying to voice both sides of the argument.
