Likewise, he would rather overpay to get an Intel CPU (along the lines of 2.4 GHz performance).
Note to VBboy:
Athlon XP 2400+ Retail - $197
Pentium 4 2.4 GHz Retail - $192

both from Newegg.com

Right, but the Athlon XP 2400+ provides up to 15% better performance in rendering and gaming, according to several Anandtech benchmarks... (Anandtech) But let's not turn this into a CPU war :) It's still a general question of considering an alternative brand.

but that P4 can go to 2.8+ with a bit of FSB manipulation with some Corsair DDR :p Then what is the better buy?

I can't argue with the nvidia only thing. Ati's drivers still suck. People who say they have had no problems with ATI are just lucky. Nvidia make quality hardware that never dissapoints even if its a tad slower. As for intel only, I have turned many people to amd just by letting them use my PC.

I think the problem is how long / how many times that your friend want to do with the computer. :)
i remember i read somewhere that someone do a research comparing the price owning intel and amd in the long run :)
and AMD come out cheaper than AMD because (I think, if i'm not wrong :) ) intel keep changing the motherboard every year, so you need to upgrade lot of things compare to AMD.

just MHO. :)

Once it became a pain in the ass to achieve 200+ mhz o'clocks on AMD I left for the sweet loving of $120 1.6a's doing 2.5@ default :)

Ok, but you probably mean that [something other than AMD] came out cheaper than AMD in the long run :)

I think a much more glaring example of Racism, where two computer related pieces of hardware are *truly* discriminated over, would be P.C. vs Mac.

There's nothing wrong with brand loyalty. The $$$ he spends will go to buying a peace of mind. And he won't loose that much performance.

If VIA came out with an ultra high performance CPU rivaling the P4 2.53 and priced it at 40$, how many of you would buy it? Even if it was rock solid and had incredible chipset support and stability?

Dude, if Via came out with that CPU, I'd be all over it! As long as those claims are true. I mean, I did buy the Athlon T-bird, like I was saying, although I had bad previous experiences with the brand. Come on, has anyone stopped buying Compaq just because some of their laptops were recalled because of a leaky/overheating battery? The only case where I really discriminate now is against Firestone tires...

Not a cpu debate but you're making them unequal for comparison. Why don't you overclock the AMD XP?

The price and preformence are basically the same between the high end AMDs and the high end Intels. I dont see the point of debating which is the better, but it depends on what you are doing.

People need to buy what suites them, and if they dont need anything special, it really doesnt matter.

Not to mention that my friend is against overclocking :) He could've increased his frame rates on that stinky old GF2-MX from 10 to maybe 12-13 fps in some games, but no! :)

One thing you forgot to mention VbBoy: you kept your Athlon for woooping 4 days before selling it. Am I wrong ?
